Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
I am so excited to celebrate our back-to-back state champions, our superior-rated choir. I was able to watch them compete, and they were awe-inspiring. They received a well deserved standing ovation after their performance! Our band competes at their state tournament Friday, and we wish them similar success. I am so proud of our hard working musicians.
Our athletes are meeting with similar success as well. Sports are finishing up their spring seasons and competing in districts. Baseball and softball are ranked high in the OSAA rankings, and we are looking forward to the first round of the state playoffs for both teams on Tuesday, May 21.
Next week, we will have our monthly fire alarm on Monday 5/13, and on Thursday 5/16, we will have a special day honoring our seniors and welcoming our incoming freshman. Seniors will participate in the grad walk in the morning--where they will go to the middle and elementary schools in their regalia and be recognized by staff and students. The incoming class of 2028 will then visit CHS in the afternoon. 8th grade parents and students, watch for more information on this “Fly Up” next week.
Finally, as we wrap up Educator Appreciation Week, I want to thank our teachers for their service to our students and community. Thank you for believing in our students, working hard so our students are happy and proud, and helping them dream big!
Have a Wonderful Week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Baseball
For the week April 29th, the Cougars went 3-0. Joe Scott threw a perfect game against Centennial on the 30th. The offense was in full force that day as well. Quintin Esmay and Brady Ackerman combined for a shutout against Centennial on May 1st. Jack Bracukmiller and Dylan Nelson combined to pitch against Putnam for a 6-2 win. On Tuesday May 7th the Cougars played well against Putnum ending the game early with an 11-1 win in 5 innings. On May 8th the Cougars defeated LaSalle 6-0 behind strong pitching and hitting from Quintin Esmay. Brady Ackerman pitched the final two innings for the save. Overall the Cougars have been playing solid defense and pitching well. The bats have heated up lately as well. The fellas continue to improve and play for each other. The Cougars are led by seniors Logan Butler, Owen Carter, Quintin Esmay, Hunter Galusha-McRobbie, Dallas Michel, Joe Scott, and Liam Steele.
Softball
Softball finished last week's schedule with two great wins against Hillsboro and Centennial. The Cougars started this week with a win against Parkrose followed by a tough loss against Wilsonville. Softball is home this Friday, May 10th against LaSalle. The young team still presents a positive win record for 7-4 in league and a #12 ranking for the state.
Boys Tennis
On Wednesday, May 1st we played at Hood River and it was a highly competitive match. It not only came down to the last varsity Match which the Cougars won 7-6 (7-5) in third. Our #1 doubles team, Matt Tamimi and Tristin Mullins won in straight sets. Our #1 singles senior Chai Hemsi Walters dropped the first set 4-6 and then roared back and won 6-0, 6-0 in the second and third sets. Our #4 doubles Atlai Rodriguez and sophomore Ethan Jeffrey stayed hot and won in straight sets continuing their undefeated season. The match came down to our #4 singles player, Carter Reed, who won 7-5 in the third set to win the match. On Tuesday May 7th, the Cougs celebrated their seniors: Chai Hemsi-Walters, Evan Kinzie, James Lopez, Atlai Rodriguez and Issac Cruz. Chai and Evan have lettered all 4 years and have been a tremendous part of the progress and improvement in the program. They are model players in not only how they carry themselves, but also how they always show up with a great attitude and a willingness to want to work with the goal of trying to improve and get the most out of their game. Overall, the team is 11-4 with two matches left before districts.
Girls Tennis
Girls tennis celebrated 11 seniors in their home match against Hood River on Wednesday. The seniors that were recognized are Adelaide Hager, Avery Poe, Evallya Burkoff, Gracelyn Chaffee, Hadley Bierma, Isabel Arredondo, Lea Heidenreich, Miriam Ahlschlager, Monserrat Colores Cruz, Nika Chernishov, and RayAnne Schedler. The #1 doubles team Isa Arrendondo and Ray Schedler have shown unrelenting drive and leadership this season. These captains demonstrated teamwork and poise as they won their hard-fought third set. Their win made for a memorable match and exemplified the tenacity that characterizes the team culture.
Girls Golf
The girl's golf team played in the Regional tournament at Aspen Lakes against the Intermountain Conference. Aspen Lakes played tough for all the girls. However, we did take 3rd which didn't get us a bid to State as a team but we have three individual qualifiers heading to state. Gracie Carter was the automatic qualifier from our Conference. Hayden Olson placed 6th at Regionals and Gracie English placed 11th which gave them a spot at the state tournament. Unfortunately Hayden is not able to play so Jazmin Diaz is the next qualifying player from Regionals heading to state. Overall a great job by these athletes.
Dance
On April 27, 2024, Canby’s dance choreographer, James Healey, was honored as the 2024 DDCA Service Award recipient. Coach Healey has, “has redefined and reinvented the possibilities for a high school dance team over the last 15 years.” Congratulations to Coach Healey.
