Dear Mary M. Knight Families and Community Members,

As we approach the Thanksgiving season, I'm excited to share updates about our students' engagement in both educational and athletic opportunities that continue to enrich our school community.

Last week, our students had a valuable experience at the Shelton Career Expo, where they joined over 1,600 high school students in exploring future education and career possibilities. Through interactive sessions on professional skills and meaningful connections with local businesses, our students gained valuable insights into their post-graduation opportunities. I'm proud of how our students represented MMK while taking advantage of this important learning experience.

We're entering an exciting period for athletics at MMK, with high school basketball beginning this Monday and our middle school basketball team hosting their first home game against Taholah on Wednesday. Looking ahead to December 7th, we'll be launching our Saturday youth basketball program for grades K-8, offering a free opportunity for our younger students to develop their skills and stay active.

I want to invite all community members to join us for an important Facility Planning meeting this Monday at 6:00 PM. Your input and participation are valuable as we plan for our school's future.

Our elementary students continue their focus on Gratitude through our Character Strong program, which aligns perfectly with this season. Speaking of gratitude, I'm pleased to recognize our latest GRIT award recipients who exemplify Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity in their daily actions. Congratulations to our elementary winners: Chloe Finch, Lucas Vogland, Luna Jones, Sadie Wulf, Levi Gonzalez, Kynslee Lingnau, and Paislee Van Boven; and our secondary recipients: Bella Buck, Maelynn Nygaard, Allyiah Wood, Carissa Reeves, Brielle Mirka, and Marissa Mikeska.

Mr. Johannes took MMK students to the annual Shelton SD Career Expo on November 13th at Shelton High School. Local businesses and community organizations demonstrated to high school students the possibilities for future education, employment and careers after graduation. The event showcased various organizations to over 1,600 high school students. Breakout sessions were held on topics such as effective workplace handshakes, mock interviews, and social media. We have included some photos from this wonderful learning opportunity below.

Saturday youth basketball begin on December 7th at Mary M. Knight. This is a great free opportunity for students in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Last year, we had a theme of Above-The-Line and recognized student that were that demonstrated characteristics or actions of being Above-The-Line. This year we will continue our student recognition program as part of our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program with our positive referrals and weekly GRIT awards.

GRIT Awards - In the 2024-25 academic year, we're all about embracing 'Nurturing Resilience, Inspiring Excellence' as our guiding principle. We believe that having GRIT – Growth, Resilience, Intensity, and Tenacity – is key to creating a culture where challenges are seen as stepping stones to greatness. We want to foster a growth mindset in our students and ourselves, understanding that hard work and dedication can help us develop our abilities and intelligence. Student will be nominated weekly if they are demonstrating characteristics of GRIT. Student will receive a certificate and shared out.
