EMOTIONAL INFORMATION & SELF-MANAGEMENT TOOLS FOR OUR HIVE
As a K-8 building, our teachers have truly embraced the need to provide students with a space to explore and hone their self-management and self-regulation skills during this school year, but we were lacking the tangible tools to really assist students in de-escalating independently.
Earlier this year we wrote, and were awarded, a Youth Mental Health Grant from the Jackson Community Foundation entitled, "Emotional Identification & Self-Management Tools for Our Hive." The check is in the mail (so nothing has been purchased yet), but the grant will be utilized to develop and purchase 10 mobile (cart-based) and grade-level specific Reset Areas for our students. These carts would allow each grade level to have access to a range of tools and resources geared specifically toward the students in that room; for example, a Kindergarten Cart may have a hands-on Worry Monster (a toy whose purpose is to “eat worries” expressed by the student) to help younger students manage stress related to being away from home, while an Eighth Grade Cart may have a book of journaling prompts to help older students write about their stress related to an upcoming test.
We are very excited to bring these tools to Concord so that we can teach our students to self-manage big emotions more effectively!

REPEATED UPDATES AND REMINDERS SECTION
MARCH IS READING MONTH
March is Reading Month activities begin Monday, March 1st. Our theme will be “Read S’More at Camp Read-A-Lot” as we celebrate throughout the month with fun dress-up days, weekly prize drawings, special visitors and more.
Children are encouraged to read at home, with a daily goal of 15 minutes for kindergarten-2nd grade, and a daily goal of 20 minutes for 3rd-5th grade. Minutes may include your child reading to self or to others, or you reading aloud to your child. Keep track of minutes on the reading log for all reading done at home, and return it to school each Thursday beginning March 4 for a chance to win some awesome prizes each week. Students meeting the minimum weekly goal will receive one ticket for the weekly prize drawing. Students doubling the goal will receive an extra ticket. The more they read, the more chances they have to win!
Here is the calendar and reading log

PANDEMIC P-EBT
In response to the current pandemic, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) are working on a new P-EBT program for the current 2020-2021 school year. The program will provide food benefits to help families with children who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals through the Federal School Breakfast or National School Lunch Programs. If you are not currently approved for free or reduced-price meals and feel you may qualify, please fill out a new application at www.LunchApp.com.
Applications can be filled out at any time throughout the remainder of the year if your household income decreases or your household size increases.
The State of Michigan will automatically add the benefits to SNAP cards or mail a card to the address on file at the school. To prevent any delays, please make sure the school has your current address. No further action is required if your student is already approved for free or reduced-price meals.
If you have any questions regarding P-EBT, please contact the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services at 1-833-905-0028. The local school does not administer the P-EBT program.
