Principal's Pen
Parents and Guardians - This is a lengthy Principal Pen this week, but contains a lot of very important information so please take time this weekend to read in its entirety.
We had a blast at the Mizzou Volleyball game today at Hearnes Center! The kids had so much fun cheering and I know the players love this game each year, because it’s the loudest and most exciting one they have! I also want to say thank you to everyone who contributed to the Mizzou Homecoming Food Drive. We have not gotten word on who the elementary winner is yet, but regardless, what an amazing effort and contribution we put forth for our local Food Bank.
Some reminders about arrival… Please stay in your car during arrival. If your child requires extra time or your assistance to get out of the car, please park on Grand and walk your student to the front or pull all the way up to the corner before letting them out. In the drop off line on Sexton, please have your students get out on the sidewalk/passenger side of the car so they exit onto the sidewalk instead of the street. Please be patient as the cars in front of you unload, and avoid passing/pulling around cars or buses, as it’s a two way street. Please pull all the way up to the corner of Grand and Sexton before stopping to drop off when possible. If you are street parking on Grand, be careful when you back up or pull out, and check for other cars and pedestrians. I realize the parking situation is not ideal and we are very crowded during drop off and pick up, so let’s all work together to keep everyone safe. Please do not turn left off of Woodlawn and enter the pickup line in front of other cars. If you’d like to come a way other than Providence, please use King Street so that you’re making a right turn into the drop off line. Thank you for your help in keeping drop off safe and efficient!
I gave several updates last night at PTSA that I wanted to share with our whole community. We had air quality testing done last week and results came back unfavorable in most rooms. Out of the 18 rooms tested, 15 came back higher than the outdoor baseline count for the two types of mold they tested for. The federal guideline for air quality is 1,000 colony-forming units per cubic meter and our highest room was 168 units, with an outdoor baseline being 36 units. The district has put ionizers in every classroom, some spaces have two. The air conditioning company will be here on September 23rd during the teacher workday to clean the basement and main floor units (third floor - Unit B/C was cleaned two weeks ago) and replace coils and filters in the units. A new round of air quality testing will be completed after these measures have been taken.
Per a Missouri state mandate, all water sources in the district are being tested. We were one of the first schools to have our water tested (due to being one of the oldest). Several places were labeled non-potable after the testing and are not used for drinking or cooking. The kitchen, nurse, and all bottle fillers/fountains have filtration systems and are potable (drinkable/consumable) water. Bottle fillers and fountains are the only place we allow students to get drinks or fill their water bottles.
I don’t have a lot to share about the construction projects. I have been told by facilities that the carpet and doors for the vestibule will be installed sometime next week or the week after. The bus loop now has a completion date of July 2025. Below is the bus loop blue print so you can visualize what it will look like once completed. Lazell O’Field, CPS Chief of Operations, will be attending our October PTSA meeting (October 10) to share the air quality testing reports, water testing report, next steps/timelines, and answer questions surrounding air quality, water quality and construction projects. If you’re able to attend that meeting, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions. We will record that meeting for those unable to attend and send out a recap with the video link in the RAP so all parents have access.
I realize this information is concerning. Please know that I have been and will continue to fight for healthy air and water for our students and staff. Have a great weekend!
Free Flu Vaccine Clinic
The 2024 student influenza vaccine (free flu shot) clinic will be offered at Ridgeway on Friday, September 20. For your child to be vaccinated, you must have filled out and returned the annual flu shot consent form. A form is attached if you would still like the opportunity to have your child participate. Please return all forms by Monday, September 16. If we do not have a completed form your child will NOT be taken down for the flu shot. If you filled out a form and you have since taken your child to get the flu shot, PLEASE, let Nurse Julie know so she can pull their permission slip. Jroberts@cpsk12.org
Ridgeway Clubs - Paper Menu Coming Home Today
Directions: Please read the description to make sure your student is eligible for the club(s) for which they sign up. Each student will be assigned one club if one is available as clubs are filled on a first come, first placed basis. If there are extra spaces available once each student has been assigned their first club, we will start with our graduating 5th graders who will be assigned to a second club if one of their choices is available. We will then move through 4th graders, 3rd, etc. The more choices you provide, the more likely your child will be assigned to a club or even more than one club. We fill slots based on the timestamp of your submission so sign up as soon as you can. If you have a second submission, we will use that time stamp and those choices will supersede the first entry. If your student shares households, please coordinate who is submitting the form for each child. We typically place over 200 students into clubs. This makes changes really difficult so please check your schedule before you submit your child’s form. Based on the popularity of your clubs choices your student may be assigned to more than two clubs if there are spaces available. It is also possible that your child may not be assigned any clubs if all of their choices are full by the time their form is submitted. Please note the dates each club meets as they vary from club to club. The link will go live tomorrow, September 14 at 8am. The deadline is September 18 at 6pm and the link will no longer be active after that. These are all of the clubs for the school year. Get your choices in as soon as possible -- many clubs fill quickly.
Form will go live tomorrow morning at 8 AM: https://forms.gle/uSoA2nuzMJRtcHhq6
Picture Day!

Unit Notes
Unit A
***Save the date! Unit A will go to Lloyd’s Family Farm on Tuesday, October 15th, in the morning. If you are willing and able to help chaperone, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher. Due to limited space, we ask that younger siblings not attend at this time.
Literacy:
Reading - We have been practicing answering and asking questions based on fiction and nonfiction texts. Our focus has been ‘Turn and talk’ to share ideas with others and build conversational skills.
Writing - We have been working hard on picking topics to write about (that we know a lot about) and revising our writing to add details to pictures and words.
Math - We have been working on routines and expectations by working on stations in our new math classes. Math teachers will reach out in the next few weeks to introduce themselves. We wait to ensure our groups are solidified before reaching out to families. This ensures that communication is consistent and lets kids be in the best-fit group.
Second Steps- We are continuing to work on emotions and how to apologize.
At-home practice - Look for reading bingo in your child’s Friday folder. Feel free to send back for a small prize when your bingo is completed.
Unit B
- Unit B is excited for our upcoming parties. We are looking for parent volunteers to either plan our parties or just be a set of helping hands! Please reach out to Mrs. Basham bbasham@cpsk12.org if you are interested.
- We have started a new writing project that will lead us into narrative writing. We will be learning how to brainstorm, plan, and draft our stories.
- Save the date! Unit B will be headed to the Planetarium on September 26th. We plan on being out of the building from 12 pm to 2 pm.
