VOGELTOWN SCHOOL PANUI
TE KURA O HUATOKI. TERM 2, WEEK 3, 2024.
KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHANAU!
Kia ora koutou parents and whānau.
You may not be aware, but Vogeltown School is part of the Central New Plymouth Kāhui Ako where we work alongside Highlands Intermediate School, New Plymouth Boys’ High School, New Plymouth Girls’ High School, Puketapu School, Welbourn School, and Woodleigh School to improve learning.
In a Kāhui Ako, schools work collaboratively to improve student achievement outcomes. This is facilitated by schools building trust, and sharing expertise in teaching and learning. By working collaboratively together, we believe we can improve the learning and achievement for all students. Currently there is a strong focus on developing coherent pathways, particularly focusing on numeracy and literacy from Y1-11.
Currently Jacqui Brown (Principal of New Plymouth Girls High School) is our Kāhui Ako leader, supported by the other Principals and a team of across school and within school leaders from the other schools.
This is an exciting space for the school to be in and as momentum of the Kāhui Ako grows it will open up many opportunities.
Kia pai tō rā whakatā. Have a great weekend!

HOME AND SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Thank you to those parents that came to the Home and School meeting. This group is an essential part of our school community, helping to support the school to improve the educational experience for all children, build links within our wider school community, and provide opportunities for parents to be involved with Vogeltown School.
Thank you to the following people for their continued leadership within this group:
- Ange Willy as Chairperson
- Renee Kinge as Secretary
- Nicola Bird as Treasurer
Last year and this year they have contributed in a variety of ways from organising fundraising events like the whānau fiesta, pizza lunches, spellathon, calendar art and contributing towards projects and activities like the junior school playscape, Paetoki syndicate movie trip, and syndicate and class funds to use to enrich learning and class environments.
If you are looking for a way of connecting with other school parents whilst adding value to the experiences of all Vogeltown children, then come along to the next meeting. New members welcome!
Just a reminder about the Spellathon - this is a fantastic learning opportunity, as well as a great fundraiser for our school! We are encouraging our tamariki to practise their spelling words regularly for when they get tested in a couple of weeks time. Thank you for your support, whānau!
TEACHER ONLY DAY-FRIDAY 31 MAY
NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY
On Wednesday, the class representatives went to Palmerston North for the NYLD (National Young Leaders Day) conference. We left at 5:30 am and arrived at 9:00 am to register. The conference started at 9:30 am, and there were lots of kids there!
The day began with the hosts welcoming us and explaining what the conference was all about. Some of the speakers included William Pike, Nate Wilbourne, Brooke Neal, Te Kahakura Boynton, and YAHYAH. After each speech, we had a question time and sometimes played a game.
Our favourite part of the conference was when YAHYAH sang her song "GO" and Nate Wilbourne shared his “cringe titled” TikTok videos advertising for Forest and Bird Youth.
Thank you to Mrs. Broderick and Mr. Goodwin for driving us and to the parents for giving us money for McDonald's. We had a great time!

PINK SHIRT DAY
Well done to all those children and staff that made an effort to come to school wearing pink, or who made a donation, as a way to stop bullying and spread kindness.
Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against bullying, mobilising their whole school, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
Today we managed to raise $341.50 to be given to the Mental Health Foundation. Well done Vogeltown School!

SPORTS NEWS
What a fantastic start we have had to our winter sport season, with some super sunny weekends for our hockey teams as well as a few chilly nights for our netballers! Next week sees the start of the miniball and basketball season. It is great to see so many of our tamariki involved in sport once again and I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents who make this possible. From finding the missing shin pad, to the endless trips across town, kids sport would not happen without you. Please also remember that parents are such important role models for our children when supporting on the sidelines. Ensuring all your encouragement is positive both during the game and in the car ride home will help your child enjoy their experience and keep them coming back to play in the future.
Remember also that coaches and referees are all volunteers and are not subjects for any kind of abuse - ever.
So be encouraging, be their number one fan, focus on the positives and let them know that you are proud of them no matter what the outcome is. And of course, have FUN!!
TERM 2 SCHOOL GOAL: KINDNESS / MANAAKITANGA
