Joyfully Embracing Our Mission
St. Clare School Family News | 7 September 2019
Come! Live in the Light!
You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
~ Matthew 5:13-16
Dear St. Clare School Families,
Dear St. Clare School Families,
The faculty and staff are grateful for your presence at last Thursday night’s Back to School Night. We realize that your time is valuable and we hope that the opportunity to meet and learn more about your children’s teachers was helpful. The important commitment to form our students is shared between the school and the home. Every child is our child. Every success is our success. Every challenge is for all of us to bear. The work becomes lighter and more joyful when it is shared.
I am extremely grateful to the faculty and staff for their hard work every day and I am especially proud of them for preparing for your visit at Back to School Night. I hope that you saw, heard and felt the commitment from this group of compassionate and caring educators.
Part of this shared commitment is worshipping together as a community. I appreciate seeing parents who are able to join us for mass on first and third Fridays at 9 A.M. We especially invite and encourage all school families, no matter your religious affiliation, to join us in community each second Sunday of the month at the 9 A.M. Family Mass. I hope to see you this Sunday, September 8. Stay awhile and visit with school families for donuts and coffee after mass.
SEPTEMBER 8 SECOND COLLECTION FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
Each September, the Diocese of San Jose sponsors a second collection in support of Catholic education. This event provides a wonderful opportunity to share the good news of this ministry. Within our schools, educators are touching the very hearts of those they serve, nurturing communion with Christ and one another. They foster a love of learning, a deep sense of compassion, and a commitment to service. They are giving our children the lens not only to navigate the world but the ability to truly change the ending. In this way, Catholic schools are at the very heart of the Church, a critical ministry within our parishes. This weekend, we invite all parishioners throughout our Diocese to join together in support of Catholic education.
SCHOOL DIRECTORY
The 2019-2020 School Directory will be included in a separate ParentSquare post. Please use the directory as it was intended: to build community among St. Clare School families. We are grateful to Eloisa Angeles who transformed information into a format that is easy to use. Thanks, too, to Ms. Teresea for compiling the information and facilitating the creation of the directory.
PARENT & STUDENT HANDBOOK
We are in the midst of reformatting the handbook and reviewing it for clarity and efficiency. It’s almost ready! We will send a separate post with the PDF when we’re ready to publish it. Thank you for your patience.
SCRIP
Please make a family commitment to support our Scrip Program. Please see below for instructions on how to sign up. Scrip proceeds help bridge the gap between programs budgeted in our tuition-based structure and other incidentals like tuition assistance and programs that enrich student life like assemblies and student-centered events.
JOG-A-THON | October 2, 2019 | Ready, set, run!
Have you sponsored a student yet? As of today, TK has the highest participation rate at 43% and total pledges amount to almost $15,000 with 18% school participation. Just 27 days left...let’s go, St. Clare!
HABITS OF THE HEART
Fr. Tad’s homily at Friday’s school mass centered on St. John Bosco’s Six Ways to Live a Joyful Life. The six are as follows: Live for God alone, Be a servant, Be careful in your associations, Spend carefully, Be humble and Carry your cross.
Last Sunday’s readings reminded us to be humble. This Sunday’s readings remind us to carry our cross. Resilience and perseverance are habits that help us carry our cross. As much as we want to avoid challenges and difficulties, being “comfortable” does not allow us to grow in ways that we need to grow.
May your week be full of joy, realizing that no matter the cross you bear, this community is walking the journey with you.
Blessings of peace,
Mrs. Cecile Mantecon, Principal
Gospel reflection - September 8, 2019 Luke 14: 25-33
In today’s Gospel, we are asked to “hate” father, mother, children, brothers, sisters, and our own lives, renounce all our possessions, and carry our cross. When we love God first in our lives, our love for our families will follow. We don’t “hate” them. We just know that God is more important than our relationship with our loved ones. If material things get in our way of loving God, we need to get rid of them. God needs to be first in our lives not possessions! Why are we supposed to carry a cross? Too often we pretend that the world is not really painful, that no one actually suffers. But they do and we do, in a big way. Taking up our cross sends us out with Jesus to help others carry their crosses. Life here on earth is about being humble, about loving others truly, and about loving God above all things.
