May Newsletter
Kindergarten is doing many new and interesting things in the month of May. We are learning about how to sound out words with blends in them. A blend is two or three consonant letters that appear together in a word, where each consonant makes its own sound. Some of the different types of blends are : bl, fr, and sw. In reading comprehension, we will be learning about how to do a five finger retell which includes characters, setting, problem, solution and the events of story. In science we will learn about birds with their lifecycles, body parts and adaptations. We will learn about different insects’ life cycles and body parts. We will also be learning about different animal habitats such as the rainforest, polar regions and savanna. Our last science topic we will discuss are frogs and ponds! Our testing window for Dibels and Iready will open on Friday May 2nd. Important dates to remember are May 2nd, this is the field day as long as weather permits. May 6th interim reports go home. May 9th is muffins with moms where moms can come in the morning to eat a muffin with their child in the classroom. May 27th is donuts with dads where dads can come in the morning to eat a donut with their child in the classroom. May 30th we have a free field trip to the park planned. Please remember to check binders and ClassDojo daily for messages and important papers from your student’s teacher.

It’s almost the end of the year, but we are still learning lots of fun things! In the upcoming weeks, we will be diving into some exciting topics. Language Arts, students will study nouns and verbs, learn about commas in a series of words, explore long vowel spellings, and practice instructional writing. Mathematics, we will focus on telling time to the nearest hour and half hour, measuring lengths, and comparing and ordering lengths. Social Science, our discussions will revolve around spring, insects, and life cycles. Please encourage your child to share what they are learning at home!
Second Grade
In May, our enthusiastic 2nd graders are diving into the exciting world of geometry, exploring shapes, angles, and spatial reasoning through engaging activities and hands-on learning. As they tackle more complex texts filled with multisyllabic words, students are enhancing their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills, igniting a passion for literature. Additionally, they are preparing for end-of-year assessments, showcasing their growth and mastery of key concepts. This month is a celebration of their hard work and a wonderful opportunity to reflect on their learning journey throughout the year!

Fourth Grade
ELA: Students will soon start preparing for end-of-grade reading tests. To help them feel confident and prepared, we'll be using a variety of practice materials and test-taking strategies in class. Regular attendance is crucial for students to keep up with the review material, so it's essential that they attend school daily unless they're genuinely ill. Consistent attendance will help students stay on track and make the most of our test prep activities.
Social Studies: Students will dive into their North Carolina state project, where they'll create the ABCs of North Carolina. To get started, they'll conduct research using various resources that are packed with historical facts, notable places, influential people, and iconic symbols that showcase the state's rich heritage. By exploring these resources, students will gather the information they need to craft a comprehensive and engaging representation of North Carolina, one letter at a time.
Fifth Grade
Hello 5th Grade Families!
The end of the year is fast approaching, and we will be visiting middle schools! Students that will be going to Jacksonville Commons Middle and Northwoods Park Middle have already received registration materials. The other middle schools will likely give their materials out during our visit on May 9th. Permission slips have been sent home, so please return them by the close of school on May 6th. Here is what we will be tackling in May:

- Math: Reviewing for EOGs
- Science: Continuing our study of ecosystems and reviewing for EOGs
- Social Studies: Continuing Civil War studies
As a reminder, don’t forget to join PowerSchool's Parent Portal if you have not done so already. This way, you can help your child keep track of their grades and missing assignments. Students have been logging in to complete their assessments and check their grades as well. Please feel free to stop by the front office with identification to complete the form to join.
Thank you for your continued support, and please be sure to keep in touch with us!

ESL
We had an incredible time during the Career fair! Our guest speaker inspired us all by sharing his journey of learning English later in life.
We’re continuing our exciting unit on The Five Senses, and this month we’re focusing on touch. Students will begin each class with a hands-on mystery activity where they’ll feel an object from nature or the classroom. Then they’ll make predictions through writing or by discussing their ideas with a partner. We’re using descriptive language to explore texture—words like bumpy, smooth, soft, and rough. This follows our hearing unit, where students listened to mystery sounds and wrote predictions using sentence starters like “I hear..”
We are so proud of our students’ progress in Lexia! Many students have completed levels and are working on their Lexia Skill Builders—creative projects that let them share personal experiences. Students are writing poems, making drawings, and giving presentations that connect to their learning. It’s amazing to see how they express themselves in English with confidence and creativity!
