Kindergarten
Kindergarten is doing many new and interesting things in the month of April. After learning about diagraphs, we will begin learning about blends in words . A blend is two or three consonant letters that appear together in a word, where each consonant makes its own sound. The different types of blends are: bl, fr, and sw. In reading comprehension, we will be learning about problem and solution in a story and how to identify them when we read a story. We will also be working on comparing stories and characters. In math we will be learning about number partners to 10. This is teaching students what numbers go together to equal 10 for example 2+8=10 and 8+2 =10. Please help students with understanding all teen numbers must have a group of ten and some ones left over. In science will are learning about living and nonliving things. Living things need food and water in order to grow. Nonliving things do not need food or water and cannot grow. We will also be learning about plant life cycles, and parts of a plant. We will learn about the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle and how to help our planet. Our last science topic will be birds! We will learn about their lifecycles, body parts and adaptations. Please remember to check binders and ClassDojo daily for messages and important papers from your student’s teacher. Important dates to remember are April 3rd , this is the third nine weeks behavior party. April 8th is the third nine weeks award ceremony. April 9th is an early release day with dismissal starting at 12:30 and career day. April 11th is our Easter Egg Hunt at 1:00 and the last day before spring break. April 14th – 21st is spring break for students and we hope everyone has a fun and safe break. Students will come back to school after spring break on April 22nd. April 25th is spring fling from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Regarding our classroom learning:
In our ELA block, we will be practicing personal narratives. Our kids are becoming professional narrators, sharing their stories with confidence and enthusiasm!
During Math, we will start learning basic geometry concepts such as shapes and measurements. We are excited to see how our students apply these concepts in real-world situations!
Second Grade
This week in class, our students are exploring measurement and graphing! They’ve been learning to measure objects using different units like inches, centimeters, meters, and even yard sticks. To help them compare and understand their measurements, the class is creating simple line plots. These hands-on activities make learning measurement both fun and meaningful.
In our reading lessons, we’re shifting our focus from simply learning to read toward building strong comprehension and fluency skills. Students are encouraged to think about the stories they read, discuss details with their classmates, and read more smoothly. This change is helping them become more confident and thoughtful readers.
Our writing time is buzzing with excitement as we introduce opinion writing! Students are learning to express what they think clearly by sharing their opinions and supporting their ideas with reasons. They’re practicing organizing their writing into a clear beginning, middle, and end, which is a great step in their writing journey.
We’re thrilled to see the progress our students are making across these areas. Thank you for your ongoing support as we explore new concepts and build essential skills together.

Students should be able to describe these elements and explain how they contribute to the overall narrative.

EC
April has arrived, dear Bulldog parents,
Spring has arrived, bursting with vibrant blooms and the promise of exciting adventures for our amazing students in the EC department! This month is packed with thrilling opportunities, from exploring the lively downtown Jacksonville area to hands-on activities like planting vegetables and flowers. With the gorgeous weather inviting us outside, our lessons will be more engaging and enriching than ever!
Our students are gearing up for incredible field trips specifically designed for their grade levels, offering them the chance to uncover fantastic places like the Fossil Museum and Sturgeon City, just to name a few! We can't help but be inspired by the extraordinary growth these students have displayed this year—it has completely blown us away! Their relentless determination and passion for learning truly shine, and it fills our hearts with joy to witness their incredible progress. Thank you for your unwavering support as we continue to nurture and celebrate these bright young minds!
ESL
Our kindergarten students are beginning a new unit on family! They will be learning words like mother, father, brother, sister, and grandparents, while also incorporating emotions (happy, sad, excited, etc.) to build meaningful sentences. This helps them express their feelings while strengthening their English skills.
All of our students are working hard to strengthen their letter-sound knowledge—a crucial step in developing strong English literacy! Through fun, hands-on activities, we are practicing phonics and word recognition to become confident readers and writers.
We are excited to welcome a special guest to our upcoming Career Fair— someone who learned English later in life! They will be sharing their experience and story, representing our incredible multilingual community.
Thank you!

AVID - Kindergarten
Kindergarten is using many AVID strategies in the classroom. We have our take home binders for organizing our handouts, homework and resource papers. In the classroom we have our interactive notebook to organize the amazing work that we have been doing in class. Students collaborate with the teacher when we make anchor charts together when we are learning new concepts. For example, we are learning about word problems and as a class we are collaborating to solve the word problems together. Students are learning to collaborate with each other during centers and when learning in small groups. In writing we are learning how to form a sentence correctly which includes a capitol letter at the beginning of the sentence, spaces between words and punctuation at the end. Students are always questioning and inquiring about what we are learning and topics that the find interesting.
