Hansen Weekly Update
November 3rd, 2024
Hello Hansen Families,
Well, we certainly had an exciting week at Hansen! On Monday we had our Hansen High Five assembly, introducing a new system of recognizing all students' positive behaviors and acts of kindness (details below). Even with Tuesday's smoke from local wildfires keeping us indoors, students and staff made the best of it, and still had a productive and fun time with different learning opportunities and activities. On Thursday we enjoyed 'Book Character Day' and saw many creative costumes depicting favorite book characters. All week we enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather, including temperatures in the high 70's on Friday, November 1st!
Indigenous People Heritage Month
Native American Heritage month was officially designated for the month of November in 1990. It is a time to celebrate the achievements of Indigenous people, Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians, and affiliated island communities. We also celebrate the history, tradition, and cultures of these people. We celebrate indigenous greats including Sacagawea, a Shoshone interpreter who guided Lewis and Clark in exploration, John Herrington, from the Chickasaw tribe who was the first Native American to fly in space, award winning chef from the Sioux tribe, James Beard, and Autumn Peltier from the Anishinaabe tribe who became their chief water commissioner at age 14, among many others. The artwork for the display pictured below was created by Mrs. Kohl, a 5th grade teacher.
If you haven't yet, please schedule a time with your child's teacher for a parent-teacher conference on the evening of the 19th, or the afternoon of the 20th.
Have a wonderful week everyone!
Thank you,
Paul McKnight

Last Week at Hansen...
Kindergarten classes created a display in the library. Mrs. Harding read the story "Creepy Carrots" to them, and then they decorated their own 'creepy' carrots.
4th and 5th Graders learn about Dia de Los Muertos
Learning about Dia de los Muertos, or "Day of the Dead," 4th Graders hung a poster in their hallway, while 5th graders completed a project using Google Slides in technology class to create their own "papel picado." Meaning "punched paper," this is a traditional Mexican folk art typically associated with Dia de los Muertos. It is designed as a tribute to loved ones who have passed and strung up as decorations for the occasion, pictured below.
Mystery Reader Day!
Mrs. Callahan's Kindergarten class had it's first Mystery Reader - an adult in a student's life who comes in to read to their class, without the students knowing who is coming to read- on Wednesday. See Below pics!

Halloween Safety with Officer Eric
Mrs. Giglio's class was visited by our Hansen School Resource Officer, CPD Officer Eric Kascavitch, who came in to talk to the class about Halloween safety. The class also talked about safety in general and how important community helpers like police officers are in our lives. It was the perfect way to end their social studies unit on community helpers!
Hansen Musicians Featured at Cantonstock on Saturday!
Hansen 5th Grade Band members warm up and prepare to entertain the crowd at the Cantonstock music festival at Canton High School on Saturday.

Introducing The Hansen High Five!
On Monday, students enjoyed meeting the CHS Bulldog, who got the school excited as we introduced a school-wide system for recognizing and rewarding each student for outstanding behavior, kind acts and doing the right thing. For more details, click here on the Hansen High Five!
