TVUSD Community Update

On October 20, 2020, Riverside County moved back into the Purple Tier. Under the current state-directed color tier chart, schools can reopen when Riverside County returns and remains in the Red Tier for two weeks. We are continuing to move forward with planning to be able to return to on-campus instruction within the timeframes we have established. *Contingent upon any changes in red/purple status at the county level.

Elementary Schools - Returns After Thanksgiving Break - November 30, 2020*

Secondary Schools - Returns at the Semester - January 5, 2021*

Our teams have been working tirelessly to collaboratively develop grades 6-12 on-campus and online learning models. While this has taken more time than originally anticipated, it will not affect the opening date planned for secondary schools.

Grade 6-12 families can expect to receive communication on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, with information about the models, schedules, and how to access the survey.

TVUSD was advised yesterday by the Temecula Valley Educators Association (TVEA) that, at this time, we do not have the necessary support from enough employee members to support the waiver application process. This means that we cannot apply for consideration of a waiver while in the Purple Tier. While we are saddened by these results, we understand and respect the need for our teachers and staff to feel safe and protected.

Please be reminded that this is a complex process with several requirements that the District does not control. The Board and Superintendent do not have the ability to supersede the state and local health authorities. These decisions are not local decisions. The waiver was our only option to pursue while being in the restrictive Purple Tier. While we do not have the required support to apply, we are ready to open when we are allowed to safely do so under state and county requirements.

We understand that opinions and feelings on this issue are quite divided. We also know that some do not agree with the state and county orders. We continue to welcome feedback about the details of TVUSD's reopening of schools plan. However, for concerns and issues with the state and county requirements that are preventing our re-opening at this time, we encourage community members to voice those through the appropriate agency representatives at the state and county levels.

Again, the District, like every other public district in our county, is not legally allowed to open at this time. We remain hopeful that Riverside County will progress back into the Red Tier quickly, so we can move forward with our planned reopening dates.
