Springing into Self-Care
Self-care refers to the proactive steps individuals take to preserve and improve their overall well-being, encompassing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health. It involves engaging in activities that promote and nurture one's health and resilience. Check out the types of self-care below and consider some ways you can add to your current self-care routine.
Guidance
Classroom guidance lessons are provided to all students by the school counselor to help support
students' social, emotional, and academic growth. Each monthly guidance lesson will center around a different topic.
August/September: Meet the Counselor/Counselor's Role
September: Coping Skills
October: Bullying Prevention Unit
November/December: College, Career, & Military Readiness
January: Identity, Diversity, & Respect
February: Empathy & Kindness
March/April: Child Protection Unit
During the months of March and April I will be teaching our Child Protection Unit during
guidance. Your child may or may not receive these particular lessons based on the choice you
selected in your Skyward forms. As a reminder, Texas legislature requires parents/guardians
opt-in if they wish for their child(ren) to receive the lessons. The Texas Education Agency requires anti-victimization lessons be taught in all public schools. If you would like to preview these materials, you can find all of the information needed at www.lisd.net/SB9.
Week of 3/17-3/21: Kindergarten & First Grade
Week of 3/24-3/28: Second & Third Grade
Week of 3/31-4/4: Fourth & Fifth Grade
Classroom Second Step Lessons
Second Step lessons are provided by the classroom teacher. Second Step® Elementary is a research-based program designed to improve students’ social-emotional skills, including growth mindset, goal-setting, emotion management, kindness, empathy, and problem-solving. Studies show that these skills can support students’ school performance, increase positive social behaviors, and reduce conduct problems such as bullying.

Watch DOGS
Watch DOGS (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative father involvement, educational initiative. Watch DOGS can be fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures. There are two primary goals of the Watch DOGS program:
1) To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important
2) To provide an extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying
If you are interested in volunteering to be a Watch DOG this school year, be sure to complete
your annual background check through LISD Voly Background Check and select your preferred
day on the Watch DOGS Volunteer Sign-Up.
Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) Topics
All elementary schools in LISD will use the Child Protection Unit (CPU) lessons and our Healthy Families presentation to cover Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) topics. Texas law requires parents to opt-in or opt-out of our Child Protection Unit lessons. You may opt your child in or out of these lessons through your child's Back to School Forms in Skyward. These must be completed annually. These lessons cover ways to be safe. While this bill includes education on the prevention of dating violence and sex trafficking, those topics are NOT addressed at the elementary level.
If you would like to preview these materials, you can find all of the
information needed at www.lisd.net/SB9.

Family Resources
In Lewisville ISD, the whole child is at the core of everything we do as a district, including our students' mental, emotional and physical health. With counselors on every campus, LISD knows parents want their children to receive an outstanding education, but more importantly, they want their children to be nurtured and cared for beyond just academics.
The Lewisville ISD Counseling and Social Work Department is grateful to partner with you to support the social and emotional needs of all LISD students. We believe education on these issues is key to helping our students become happy and successful individuals. Please review these flyers describing different social issues our students may face. If you have any areas that we may assist you or your student, please feel free to contact me.
We appreciate the opportunity to work with your student(s).
