Teddington School Newsletter

Headteachers Message
Dear Families
As we wrap up another week at Teddington, I am delighted to share some exciting updates and important announcements with you all.
This week, we were thrilled to host another TEDdington Talk with Mark Agnew. Mark was awarded European Adventurer of the Year in 2023 after he became the first person to kayak from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific through the Arctic Northwest Passage. Mark spoke to the students about his adventures and how through determination, planning and resilience even seemingly impossible feats can be achieved. This is another fantastic example of how putting a range of real-life people, from different backgrounds in front of students can hopefully inspire individuals to achieve and pursue their chosen passion.
Secondly, a huge congratulations to our GCSE and A-Level students who have completed their exams. As a school this year we have run over 240 separate examinations, quite an effort. Students hard work and dedication has also not gone unnoticed, we are confident they will achieve the outcomes they deserve in the summer. We now look forward to celebrating your achievements at the respective Year 11 Prom and Year 13 Graduation Ball.
Next week, we are excited to welcome Year 6 families in for an information evening. I am looking forward to meeting our new parents/carers and outlining the journey ahead. Additionally, the following week, on Wednesday 3 July, we will host a special event exclusively for Year 5 prospective families. This will be an excellent opportunity for parents to learn more about what our school has to offer, if you know any prospective families who don't access this newsletter, please pass the message on.
Please also note that starting from next Friday, reception will have restricted face-to-face access due to planned reconfiguration works. There will also be a small machinery compound installed at the front of the school to support the relaying of our new Astro turfs. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as we work to enhance our school facilities.
Lastly, I must address an important safety issue. Can I ask students refrain from entering the woodlands in Langdon Park, where recently, there has been significant damage to a 250-year-old tree. The Langdon Park Residents Association has informed us that they will not be held liable for any injuries or accidents should children continue to enter the woods and climb trees within the estate. Your cooperation is crucial and hugely appreciated.
Thank you for your continued support! Have a wonderful, hopefully very sunny, weekend.
Kind regards
Mr P Grills
Headteacher
Weekly Highlights
‘This week, 9 of our gifted and talented Year 9 English students were invited to take part in a novel writing workshop at Tolworth Girls School. They were lucky to be a part of 32 students who received expert advice on how to write, produce and market a novel. The workshop allowed them the chance to meet a published author, Alice Mcilroy, who gave an extensive talk on her journey from English teacher to published author. They were then given the opportunity to write their own ’first chapter’ of a thriller/sci-fi novel which they had planned. Two of our students (Emma C and Lilia B) were a part of the final group of 5 students who shared their impressive writing and received a prize for the skills showed during the workshop.’ - Mr St Louis-Laborde
Congratulations to Ece, Vaishnavi, and Molly for their wining bookmark designs! Each winner will receive a £5 voucher to spend at the Scholastic Book Fair next week!
The bookfair will be open during break and lunch. All students are invited! Students will have the option to pay by card, to bring home a wish list that can be paid for online, or to purchase vouchers online (Book Fair Gift Vouchers - Scholastic Book Fairs) that can be used for books at the fair.
A Friday well spent! Our Year 12s attended the University & Careers Fair at Emirates Stadium! 🎓

Weekly Head of Year Message
Dear Families
Our Year 9s are now in their final term of KS3 and will soon be commencing their GCSEs and KS4 study. It has been brilliant to see some of the GCSE taster days happening recently and the hard work and focus that students have been putting into these.
Last week saw a golden ticket competition running where students were given golden tickets in class for outstanding work, one ticket available per lesson. The tickets were then exchanged for a prize. It was great to then choose one of these tickets for a big raffle prize. Well done to all those who won golden tickets. We have also still been running our Unsung Heroes' prizes on Friday’s, recognising those who are always doing the right thing.
I am excited and looking forward to taking 30 students on the German exchange trip next week. Please keep an eye out for updates on the school social media accounts!
I want to wish all students and families a brilliant summer when it comes around. Students have made great progress, and it is hard to believe they only have two years left at Teddington School. Make sure to enjoy the well-earned break and come back ready to take on GCSEs for the final two years.
Kind regards
Mr F Hole
Head of Year 9
📢 Call for volunteers 📢
A message from Ms Merson, Assistant Headteacher
We are excited to announce that our school will be relaunching the Rapid Reading programme in September 2024, aimed at enhancing our students' literacy skills. This innovative reading intervention programme has been designed to support children in developing their reading fluency, comprehension, and overall love for reading.
To ensure the success of this programme, we are seeking enthusiastic parent volunteers who are willing to dedicate a morning slot from 08:30 - 09:00 to help our young readers thrive. No prior experience is necessary as comprehensive training will be provided in September. An exact date and time to be confirmed.
If you are interested in making a positive impact on our students' reading journey, please complete this form by Friday 12 July 2024.
Thank you for your support and dedication to our school community.
If you have any questions regarding the programme, please contact me via mersonl@teddingtonschool.org.
