CVU Celebrations
February 14, 2025
Dear CVU Community,
What’s your Valentine’s tradition? Maybe it’s catching a movie with your best friend—like a certain superintendent we all know. Perhaps it’s sending a plushie to a special someone or surprising your mom with flowers. However you celebrate, take a moment to add a little kindness and joy to someone else’s day.
And let’s keep that energy going beyond Valentine’s Day. How can you bring a little extra happiness to someone next week? A smile, a kind word, or a small act of encouragement can go a long way.
So here’s my challenge to you: over the next ten days, find a way to randomly brighten someone’s day. Let's spread the love, Hawks! 💙❤️
Upcoming Dates
2/21 - Winter Carnival
2/24-2/28 - February Break
3/3 - Advisor/Student/Parent/Caregiver Conferences, no school
3/4 - District In-Service, no school
3/12 - CVU Blood Drive
Student Council
Happy Friday and Valentine’s Day, CVU! This is Ariel. This week, Student Council continued work on upcoming events including 8th Grade Family Night, a Valentine’s Day photo booth, and the March CVU Blood Drive. Due to the snow day, 8th Grade Family Night was postponed, with the new date being TBA. We can’t wait to welcome the Class of 2029 to CVU! We hope everyone enjoyed the Valentine’s Day photo booth that Student Council members worked on during Tuesday’s meeting. Additionally, the CVU Blood Drive is coming up on Wednesday, March 12th. We want to set a new record for CVU donations, so if you are eligible, sign up as soon as you get the chance! Student Council members will be running sign ups in the cafeteria in the coming weeks, so don’t hesitate to stop by and see if you meet the qualifications. Have a fun, snowy weekend!
Student Celebrations
From Zalfa Kasti: French class students engage in interactive learning activities to practice verb conjugation.
From Karen Kirkland: AP Statistics students are learning about significance tests for making inferences about proportions. Although the content is extremely useful and important, sometimes we have fun learning about it.
All five of Hood’s and Kirkland‘s classes found convincing evidence that they can distinguish the flavors and hence rejected the null hypothesis that they couldn’t. This is Kirkland‘s W4 class putting the claim to the test.
From Chris Hood: How do you estimate the true proportion of Earth that's covered by water? You create a confidence interval by first first taking a sample of random locations on Earth and cushion that sample proportion with a margin of error to increase the likelihood that you capture the true proportion. AP Stats students in Hood/Kirkland classes captured the true proportion (71%) in every class! Take note that Marlea's left pinky is in water during this particular sample!
This merry band of Fairbanks ninth grade mathematicians demonstrate their understanding of transformations of 6 different graph families. Who knew translations and reflections could be so much fun?!
From Jess LaPlante: Teamwork makes the dream work in Snelling PA.
From Sarah Strack: CVU Nordic Ski Team had their annual costume race on Tuesday. This is one of the most anticipated races of the season and skiers came up with some very creative costumes! Seniors Dylan Elders and Brian Simkins skied 2 laps "in" the canoe they made over the weekend- complete with binoculars, paddles, and fishing gear. 9th graders Jack Biunno and Story Holmes stayed warm in their costumes- Jack was "flying" as he went around the course and Story kept looking for that pot of gold! 11th grader Charlie Schramm and 9th grader Axel Macik were the skiing variation of Dr Seuss- V1 and V2 (skiing techniques).
Fun was had by all and the team is already planning their costumes for next year!
RoboHawks Qualify for World Championships!
All 3 RoboHawks Teams (22683 Left, 5741 Middle, 27581 Right) with their robots, awards, and a $1500 check from Comcast to help 5741 go to Worlds!
On Saturday, 2/8, the THREE teams that represent RedHawk Robotics competed in the FIRST Robotics FTC Vermont State Championships at SBHS. All three teams have been working hard since the beginning of the school year, building the robots and doing outreach to the community. CVU Alumni & Faculty Spotted at Robotics Competition!
Jess Lemieux and her son spent some time learning about robots from Varsity RoboHawk Ben Gordon at last Saturday's VT State Robotics Competition!
ALSO spotted were CVU Alumni and former RoboHawk members: (l-r) Crawford Phillips, Jack Gourlay, and Jared Kennedy! They were volunteering at this past Saturday's VT State Robotics Championship. Seen here catching up with CVU teacher and coach Olaf Verdonk. It is awesome to see these former RoboHawks returning and continuing their commitment to supporting STEM opportunities for kids in Vermont! Heartfelt THANKS for your help and support in making the State Championship event a success!
This past weekend five members of the CVU Neuroscience Club competed in the Vermont Brain Bee! Elle McAvey, Sebastian Lemos, Alex Wemple, Jack Daly, and Gabriel Milne went to UVM Larner College of Medicine on Saturday morning to compete in a State-Wide neuroscience competition. Eight different schools were represented at the competition, and out of the 10 top finalists to advance into the final oral round, all five of CVU's members were selected! CVU won the team competition, and Elle McAvey placed 2nd in VT for the individual competition. Congratulations!

From Co-President (WIB) Tia Natale: Women in Business is thrilled to announce that, thanks to the generous donations from our incredible community, our "Girls Supporting The Girls" bra drive has collected over 140 bras (YAY)! This equates to approximately $5,720, which will help families and women in need afford essentials like food, rent, and education instead of worrying about bras.
Our WIB girls are truly overwhelmed by the love and support you have all provided! One remarkable donor even contributed 33 bras—You go, girl!
From Naomi Williams: The New American Outreach Club spread a little Valentine’s Day love this week!
From Kathryn Kernoff: Congratulations to Joaquin Cowart, Patrick Donegan, Meredith Golek, and Nolan Ross for qualifying to the State Debate Championship Tournament. Only 48 students in the State qualify each year. The top 48 students will compete at St. Michael's on March 8 to determine the State champion.
From Cameron Brownell: On Friday, February 7, CVU hosted the District III Chorus Festival with guest conductor Andrea Nardone.
