A message from the principal
Greetings Island Lake Families,
How can you make a school of roughly 750 students feel small? By creating opportunities for students across grade levels to sit and learn in a classroom together. Island Lake hosted our first Pack Pride meeting this morning, where students from around the school are mixed into classrooms for community-building and social-emotional learning. Our students did a fine job during this short deviation from our scripted school day to get to know each other and talk about the school year.
October has been recognized as National Principals Month, and I would like to take this opportunity to lift up the transformative work of Island Lake’s Associate Principal, Cori Thompson. Along with many areas of her work, AP Thompson brings dynamic and strategic leadership to our Building Management Climate & Culture Team (BMCC), as well as to our tiered system of academic and behavior supports. Mrs. Thompson is a responsive leader who not only has a vision for educational excellence, but has proven to be able to outline pathways and move stakeholders towards that desired reality. Please join me in congratulating AP Thompson on her exceptional leadership!
I would like to invite each of you to my second Caregiver Conversation on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 6pm-7pm in Google Meet. The topic of this meeting came from our most recent PTA meeting, where literacy instruction and the READ Act was discussed. I will be sharing how our literacy work is experiencing a philosophical shift towards the Science of Reading. Be on the lookout for a link to that virtual conversation, and I hope to see you there!
Once again, please note that Monday (10/14/24), as well as Thursday (10/17/24) and Friday (10/18/24) are non-school days for students.
Have a lovely weekend!

Specialist Star Day - Wednesday, Oct. 16
School Psychologist's Corner - Wear ORANGE for Unity Day on Wedensday, Oct. 16
Save the Date! On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Island Lake staff and students will be participating in Unity Day for the 6th year in a row. This event was created by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, in an effort to come together in one giant ORANGE message of hope and support. We will wear ORANGE to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying.
Digital Citizenship Week
October 14-18 is Digital Citizenship week! In our STEAM (1st-3rd grade) and Info Lit (4th grade) classes with Mrs. Frye and Mr. Malsom we've been discussing what it means to be a responsible digital citizen. We have discussed how technology makes us feel, ways we interact with others online, and how to balance our screen time and unplugged time.
Students have also learned how to keep their private information private and recognize and stand up to mean behavior online. The upcoming break would be a great time to extend some of these conversations into your home. www.commonsense.org has great resources for ways families can talk about technology.

DISTRICT NEWS
Student cell phone use policy
This year, the School Board will engage the school district community to help inform the creation of a student cell phone use policy. A cell phone advisory group of students, parents and teachers is working collaboratively with administration to develop recommendations for cell phone use by educational level (elementary school, middle school, high school). These recommendations will be provided to the School Board which will develop a cell phone policy in compliance with new legislation. A survey for parents, secondary students and staff will be shared in the coming weeks, and community engagement sessions will be hosted as well. Learn more at mvpschools.org/cellphones.
