Trick or Trunk!
We need your help! In order to ensure that we have a fun and successful trick or trunk, we need candy and we need trunks! Beginning Oct 10th, we will be having a contest to see which class can collect the most pounds of candy! Students who bring in a bag of candy will receive a ticket for admission to Trick or Trunk. The number of pounds of candy will be tallied for each class and the class with the most amount of candy donated will win a pizza party with Ms. Bedell! We are also in need of volunteers to decorate their trunks. We will be giving a prize to the best decorated trunk! We will be providing the candy! If you are interested in decorating your car and passing out candy during our trick or trunk, please contact Maria Beken at 303-982-4853. This event is for Eiber students and their immediate family only. Only students and their younger siblings will be allowed to trick or trunk.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences are right around the corner! You should have received a message from your child's teacher with a link to a sign-up for conferences. If you have not done so already, please sign up for a 20 minute time slot to meet with your child's teacher. Conferences are a great opportunity for you to learn more about your child's work habits, strengths, areas for growth and how you can help them with their learning at home.
Parent Coffee

KINDER
Ms. Halloran
Kindergarteners have been in school now for a bit… they will continue to practice school and classroom routines. This helps them establish positive patterns that will enhance learning and give children the confidence to take risks as they become more independent. In literacy, kindergarteners have been studying letters and sounds. We will continue to introduce and review them for the next few weeks. In addition, we are concentrating on sight words that will assist students to access text. We will begin to intensively focus on consonants, tapping and blending to begin reading cvc pattern words. Handwriting is an essential component of communication and they will work on enhancing their handwriting skills throughout the year. All children are practicing proper letter formation and writing their first name. In math, we are concentrating on developing a strong sense of number to 10. We have been learning the days of the week and the months of the year. Please remember to send your child with a backpack to school every day. Also, please return the Wednesday Folder on Thursday, signed by a parent. Thanks! Finally, we have been doing a lot of work on communicating with each other in a positive manner: including using “please”, “thank-you”, and concentrating on our 3Rs (Ready, Responsible, and Respectful).

Estoy muy feliz de ver cómo los estudiantes han hecho un maravilloso trabajo ajustándose a las rutinas y procedimientos que hemos implementado en el salón. Ya comenzamos a sumergirnos en el plan de estudios y nos la estamos pasando genial creciendo académicamente y socialmente.

FIRST GRADE / PRIMER GRADO

Wow, September went fast in First grade!
I am impressed each and every day with how much students have grown already. In reading, first graders have been exploring informational texts and learning how they differ from fiction in their purpose and design. In math, we are working on strategies for adding numbers together and taking them apart. We’re also excited to share with you our growth as social and emotional learners. We have been practicing paying attention and noticing when we get distracted so we can get back on track! As always, be sure to get your students here on time every day to support them in this journey. I am looking forward to talking with you about your students' growth at conferences, see you then!

Fall is in the air! It is an exciting time! Many conversations revolve around Halloween and celebrating Trick or Trunk, here at school, with their classmates. We have been sharing our thoughts on costumes and our favorite Halloween treats. Around the excitement and collegiality, we have been working on lots of phonics skills. First graders are building and reading words with CVC patterns, digraphs, and magic E. We have been learning and practicing sight words to increase our accuracy and fluency. In reading comprehension, we have been learning how to activate our thinking using picture walks, making predictions, and breaking down text using literary elements. In writing, we are writing but using a lot of oral structure to build the connection between talking and writing. It is impressive to see how much they have grown in confidence and ability in thirty days. Math skills remain rooted in numeracy and using good counting strategies to break down addition and subtraction situations. This includes: understanding how math symbols communicate with us and how interpreting those symbols influence our problem solving strategies.

Estos meses han estado llenos de fabulosas experiencias con sus estudiantes. Hemos aprendido muchas cosas interesantes durante nuestro tiempo juntos. En lectura nos hemos esforzado por subir nuestro nivel de lectura, tratando de leer con la entonación correcta y aumentando el vocabulario. En escritura nos hemos enfocado en escribir oraciones completas y con sentido, usando mayúsculas, espacios y puntos. En matemáticas continuamos resolviendo problemas de suma y resta usando las mejores estrategias para resolver las ecuaciones. En estudios sociales aprendimos un poco más de las tradiciones que se celebran en nuestra comunidad. En las conferencias podrán ver los detalles de lo mucho que han avanzado sus hijos y lo mucho que hemos disfrutado nuestro tiempo juntos.
SECOND GRADE/SEGUNDO GRADO

Fall is really in the air! Our science minds are thinking: Why do leaves change color in the Fall? What’s the biggest apple in the world? Why are pumpkins orange? We will be doing a variety of fun activities around these questions.
Second graders are practicing addition and subtraction and discovering a variety of new tricks and strategies to do this. Then they use these to solve and explain their thinking around story problems. We are all working hard!
We have finished our personal narratives. Look for the finished paper in Wednesday folders. Our next project is: Writing a descriptive essay about a place you would like to visit. Sounds like fun!
Reading every night for 20 minutes is so important. Also, if you haven’t had a conference with me yet, please let’s be sure to get that scheduled. See you soon!

En 2 / 3 grado dualinguaje vamos a continuar trabajando muy duro en espanol y en ingles! Vamos a continuar con la suma y la resta en matemáticas, encontrando los numeros importantes en los problemas de palabras en mate. Tambien, vamos a continuar lectura en ingles y espanol cada dia. En escritura estamos escribiendo una narrative en espanol. Estamos muy emocionados para continuar aprendiendo en este clase! Gracias!
THIRD GRADE
Mrs. Triolo
Third grade reading has switched its theme to “Use Your Words” so our stories revolve around the different ways we communicate. Our writing focus is similar as we learn about letter writing.
In math, all the kids have successfully tackled multidigit addition and subtraction and will begin to work on multiplication and division. Dreambox continues to be an important part of the math hours. The lessons and activities provide much needed rigorous practice and fun introductions to new skills.
We are finishing up our science unit on “Forces” and will begin social studies soon, where we will study communities and responsibilities.

FOURTH GRADE/CUARTO GRADO

FIFTH GRADE
Dr. Widstrom and Ms. Davis
It's hard to believe it is already October. Students (and teachers) are mostly settled into routines and digging into fifth grade learning. We have a good idea as to each student's strengths and needs and plan accordingly. Upcoming units of study include multiplication/division with fractions, space systems, settlers and colonization, and how genre affects the way a story is told. We look forward to seeing you at conferences and discussing your student's progress. Don't forget to sign up online.
Ms. Robles
The Big Kahunas have been working on learning what stamina means and what that looks, and sounds like in the classroom. Our academia endeavors are moving along slowly as we build our stamina and perseverance. What we are doing in writing is working on engaging students in an essay of who/what inspires them. In math, we are learning how to round, add/subtract, estimate, and graph decimals. Some things to help students connect to the world are how you use decimals in your everyday life. For example, I have a budget and if I go shopping, I have to add/take away the money I spend from my allowance. Etc. In social studies we are learning about colonization: explorers of the 15th-17th century. In science we are diving into our Solar System and creating a doodlesketch of our Solar System. We are engulfing in our second module of our New Curriculum; Into Reading - which is called What a Story focusing on narratives. During SOAR Friday's we participate in creating some DIY art pieces for Trick-or-Trunk decor. Our latest creation is a spooky haunted house.
A few shout outs in the classroom! Whoot! Whoot! These students have exemplified outstanding behavior and work ethic. I know I can always count on these students to do the right thing. These students are: Amari Shirley-Rodriguez, Ruben Guerra, and Hector Nava Estrada! Way to go friends! I am so proud of each of you, and thankful you are here with us in D4!
SPECIALS
ART - Mrs. Mossholder
During September we have been learning good studio habits. Our drawing strategy was an Echo drawing activity. This is a skill building exercise that resulted in the collaborative castle in the main hall.
I have started building our online gallery for this year. We will continue to use Artsonia.com. Please check out our school gallery online by visiting their website and entering Eiber Elementary in the search bar or email me for a link to your student's artwork.
In October we will be learning about the 3 major categories in art and how to talk about art without hurting anyone's feelings. Students will focus on guided drawing and familiar lines and shapes strategies to build their drawing skills.
PE - Mr. Schwab
In PE this Fall we are starting some exciting units. Flag football and Basketball for grades third, fourth and fifth. Kinder, first and second are working on throwing and kicking skills and activities as well as learning about the five food groups.
MUSIC - Dr. Culig
This October, our music classes continue to engage in varied musical activities such as playing game songs, moving and dancing to music, instrumental ensemble playing, reading notations, singing, listening, and creating. In this picture, our fourth graders are dancing “Nigun Atik” (Eng. “Old Melody”) from Israel. Moreover, because our voices are our natural instruments, we are forming the “Soaring Eagles Choir” this year. This will be offered before school on Tuesdays to students in second to fifth grades. A letter will be sent home to families soon for further details.

Please take some time to read through the attached newsletter for some great tips that will help you provide a positive impact on your student's achievement. We will send out this newsletter monthly so please keep an eye out for it!
Help your child do well in school! Try a new idea every day!
Here are a some suggestions on things you can try with your child every day to help them do well in school!
- Ask your child, "What was the most interesting thing you learned today?"
- How many words can your child make from the letters in OCTOBER?
- Start a made-up story. "A man went down the road and he met a ..... ." Let your child finish the story.
- Maintain a regular bedtime for your child. Elementary schoolers need at least 9 hours of sleep daily.
