Mrs. Rice's Reflection
Welcome to October, Riverside Families!
I want to thank the Riverside community for the amazing participation in the 2024 Homecoming Parade. This was our largest group since I came to Riverside in 2022. Our students had a great time, and it was awesome to see so many people in their Riverside gear.
I also want to thank our fabulous parents who attended our PIE event: Parents in Education. Together we celebrated our school and discussed how we can make parents feel more welcome here. Then we drafted future topics for these sessions. There was a lot of interest in talking about how families can support at home when student behaviors are tough, creating moments for widespread invitations for volunteering opportunities, and ways to bring home cultures into school.
All of these ideas are just ideas right now, but we are going to work together in this group to bring these ideas into the culture of our school.
The last thing I want to share from our PIE event is our School-Parent Compact displayed below.
This is something we first drafted in 2022 with parents who attended the PTA and Title 1 Intervention meetings; we updated it as a PIE committee in September of this year. Next I’m looking to get a bigger Riverside voice represented in our feedback to complete a final draft of this compact so we can share it with families. Essentially this is a one-page document that explains our school values and what parents, students, and staff can agree to in order to share in the continuous improvement of the school culture that supports these values.
At conferences, you will see this displayed and you can offer feedback on the compact through a QR Code while you wait for your students’ teacher.
Save the date: Please join us at our next PIE event on November 21, from 1:30-2:30.
Thank you always for your feedback and partnership as we navigate our school journey together.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Tara Rice
Upcoming Halloween Festivties!!
Instead of a Walk-a-Thon, Riverside parent and teacher volunteers are including more families by doing an after school Trunk or Treat event from 4:30-6:30 on Friday, October 25. Please join us in decorating a trunk for the event by signing up in the office. If you are unable to attend the Trunk or Treat and would still like to donate candy for the event, please feel free to do so. We will be accepting donations in the office. During the school day we will not do a Halloween costume parade. We do not want to compete with our free Riverside family event.
Students and staff may come to school in costume on Halloween. Please follow these guidelines: we want to be able to see who you are! Please keep your face visible and any fake weapons at home.

Using Direction Words in Conversations
Forward number word sequence (FNWS) and Backward number word sequence (BNWS) refers to the order of numbers when counting forwards and backwards. As students develop in their math skills, their range of number sequences expands. However number sequences aren’t the only important counting skill for students. Being able to say one or two words after or before a given number word is just as important.
In the math world, these words are often used to indicate the order of numbers. We use the word after when posing questions like, “What number comes AFTER 109?” or “What is the number that comes BEFORE 110?” Despite the frequency that we might use these words in our everyday lives, they pose a struggle for many students when used in math talk. It can often be a struggle for our students to understand which is which. Students can easily recite a sequence of numbers, but when asked to say a number before or after a given number they are not able to do it. Or they can do it but have to start from one and count forward to identify the number before or after. Learning about number words and number word sequences is a very prominent aspect of early number knowledge. This knowledge provides an important basis for the development in early arithmetical strategies (the first strategies that children use in additive and subtractive situations).
Try working with your student at home on identifying the number words before or after given numbers. If your child is in kindergarten, work on a range of 0-10, first grade 0-120, second grade 0-1000, and third and fourth grade 0-100,000. SImply taking a couple of minutes during your morning or evening routines to work on this skill can make a big difference at school. If you find your child is struggling to understand the difference between these two words, use examples from home ”You can play on your tablet AFTER you take out the trash.” or “Brush your teeth BEFORE you go to bed.” Also, try including words like “next” or phrases like “in front of.” And it never hurts to have a number chart or number line handy to help guide their thinking. Ask your child’s classroom teacher or email me lrenoos@lakeviewspartans.org if you’d like one to use at home or check out https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/apps for number lines, charts and other handy math tools.
The more we use number words at home the better. So keep up the good work, grown-ups!

Johnny Appleseed
Last Friday, kindergarten students in Ms. Volesky and Ms. Jewell’s classes enjoyed celebrating Johnny Appleseed Day
The celebration consisted of working in teams to see how high they could stack apples, peeling and cutting apples for homemade applesauce, taste testing apples and recording their thoughts, and using apples to create art!
3rd grade is spectacular!!
Mrs. Richards' students were really excited to be able to put our mask on my picture! We talked about it in morning meeting and we are approaching our second Sparty goal of 100. Siri chose a random number and that student was chosen to put the mask on my face.
Mrs. Richards' class was super excited to help earn the school wide Sparty Party!
