KSOA/Call The Game – Summer Camps/Clinics
Once again, the KSOA & Call The Game will be partnering together to provide training opportunities for our local area officials this summer.
Shawnee Mission Northwest Team Camp
Mondays in June – 06/03, 06/10, 06/17, 06/24
Level: Varsity Girls
Audience: Current varsity officials that work 4A-5A-6A games for CTG. John Dehan will schedule all camp officials via Arbiter.
Notes: Games will be officiated using 3-person crews and will focus on NFHS philosophies, mechanics and positioning. Game crews will be divided by experience when possible.
Wednesdays & Thursdays in June – 06/05 through 06/27
Level: Sub-Varsity Girls
Audience: New & current officials working all levels of sub-varsity for CTG. This would include officials who work basketball for the various local youth sports organizations. John Dehan will schedule all camp officials via Arbiter.
Notes: Games will be officiated using NFHS philosophies, mechanics and positioning. Gyms will be split between 2-person (new and true sub-varsity) and 3-person crews (those newer to 3-person mechanics looking to learn). Game crews will be divided by experience when possible.
Mill Valley Shot Clock Showdown
June 21-23, 2024
Level: Varsity Girls
Audience: Current varsity officials that work 4A-5A-6A games for CTG. John Dehan will schedule officials via Arbiter.
Notes: Games will be officiated using 3-person crews and will focus on NFHS philosophies, mechanics and positioning. The new shot clock rules will be utilized for all games during this event, which will provide varsity officials an opportunity to become more familiar working with the shot clock going into the 2024/2025 basketball season.
** We are working with the KSHSAA to potentially recognize this clinic as a KSHSAA-approved clinic for registered officials. Stay tuned on that!
Situation of the Month
Violation or Not?
A1 attempts to catch the ball while running rapidly. A1 muffs the ball but succeeds in securing it before it strikes the floor. A1 then begins a dribble, taking several steps between the time the ball was first touched until it was caught.
See Ruling at the end of newsletter.
Access to Game Film (HUDL)
Below is the process for member officials to obtain game film:
- KSOA member officials should navigate to the basketball page on the KSOA website.
- Click on the HUDL Request button - this will open a HUDL game film request Google Form.
- Enter the required information on the HUDL game film request form and click submit.
- A member of the KSOA basketball committee will receive an auto-generated email alerting KSOA to the game film request.
- A member of the KSOA basketball committee will then search for the teams' game film in HUDL*
- If the game film is available in HUDL, it will be exchanged with the KSOA member official via an email link to the film in HUDL.
- If the game film is unavailable in HUDL, a request will be submitted to the teams/schools requesting the film be made available.
- If the teams/schools honor the film request, it will uploaded to HUDL and exchanged with the KSOA member official via an email link to the film in HUDL.
- If the teams/schools do not honor the film request, the member official will be notified that the game film is unavailable.
*NOTE: Unfortunately, not all games are always shared by the schools or even filmed in the first place. This is especially true for sub-varsity games, which only average about 30-40% success rate.
