MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Students and Families,
Last week my message focused on district and school support of our immigrant and refugee students and families regarding the presidential executive orders. In addition to supporting our immigrant and refugee students a district email went out reinforcing our deep support and advocacy of LGBTQ2SIA+, nonbinary, and transgender students. Be assured that at Franklin we will protect and wrap around our LGBTQ2SIA+ community. I'd like to share a slide deck created by one of our amazing English teachers that affirms teacher and staff commitment to supporting our students and provides other important resources. We will respond to any hate-based behavior or incident. Key practices that we follow at PPS and Franklin High School are:
Students are experts on their own identities.
Students choose restrooms and locker rooms that align with their identity.
Students determine the name and pronouns that best reflect their identity, which PPS staff will honor.
Staff will address and interrupt anti-trans language or behavior every time.
I recognize that the country's political climate continues to move and change all around us. I encourage you to reach out to a trusted adult if you have any questions or concerns regarding your safety and well-being.
Thank you,
Dr. Z

Everyone is welcome to attend a celebration to honor retired boys' basketball coach, Scott Aker, on Friday, February 7th. The meet and greet will start at 5:00pm in Room G-018 (basement of the gym building) and Coach Aker will be recognized at halftime of the boys' varsity game. Use the code word "AKER" to get into the game for free. Here is a bit of information about Coach Aker:
Scott began his varsity basketball coaching years at Franklin in the fall of 1991, after teaching and coaching basketball, volleyball, tennis and girls' golf at Milwaukie and Marshall High Schools. At Franklin he was the boys PE teacher and varsity boys basketball coach. He was also an assistant freshman football coach with Rick Holte. He coached at Franklin from 1991-1998, and served as the school's athletic director from 1994-98. He then transferred to Wilson (now Wells) from 1998-2017. He was the Wilson athletic director from 2006-2014. He retired from teaching in 2014. Scott returned to Franklin to coach the varsity boys' basketball team from 2017-2020. He was honored as the Oregon High School Basketball coach of the year for the 2018-2019 season.
