Biology Students Study DNA
Biology, advanced biology, and anatomy students recently had the exciting opportunity to use DNA Gel Electrophoresis kits from Virginia Tech's Fralin Life Sciences Institute in a hands-on lab experience. The students worked with the kits to run DNA gels and generate DNA fingerprints, a technique widely used in genetics to analyze and compare DNA samples.
As part of the lab, students extracted DNA from biological samples with a micropipette and prepared them for analysis. They then used gel electrophoresis, a process that applies an electric field to separate DNA fragments based on their size. By loading the DNA samples into the gel and running the electrophoresis, students could visualize the band patterns that form, which are unique to each individual’s DNA.
The DNA fingerprints created by the gels allowed students to explore genetic variation and learn about the underlying principles of molecular biology, such as DNA structure, sequence, and the role of restriction enzymes in cutting DNA at specific points. The activity not only gave students a deeper understanding of how genetic testing works but also demonstrated how scientists use gel electrophoresis in a variety of real-world applications, including forensic science, genetic research, and disease diagnosis.
This hands-on experience in the lab reinforced key concepts in genetics and provided students with valuable exposure to advanced biological techniques used in research and clinical settings.

Randolph-Henry High School and Central Middle School Host Heartfelt Veteran’s Day Program Honoring Local Heroes
Charlotte Court House, VA — On November 11th at 2:00 PM, Randolph-Henry High School and Central Middle School united to host a meaningful Veteran’s Day Program in the CMS gym, dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of our local veterans. The event was a moving tribute, filled with heartfelt contributions from students, guest speakers, and faculty that highlighted the schools' deep respect and gratitude for the veterans who have served our nation.
The program was masterfully emceed by William Collins, who played a vital role in organizing the event and guiding the audience through each meaningful segment of the ceremony. We were also honored to welcome guest speakers from the Hampden-Sydney ROTC, who shared their insights on service, leadership, and the values embodied by our nation’s veterans, leaving a profound impact on all present.
Students’ creativity was on full display as the gym’s walls were adorned with vibrant artwork, crafted with care by students to reflect themes of patriotism, courage, and unity. Several students participated in a special reading of essays they had written, sharing thoughtful reflections on the importance of service, freedom, and the values upheld by veterans. These essays not only highlighted the students' writing talents but also served as a powerful reminder of the impact veterans have on the community and the country.
The Randolph-Henry and Central Middle School combined band played an array of patriotic music, adding a moving soundtrack to the ceremony that captured the pride and appreciation of all in attendance. As a solemn and respectful closing, Clara Nelson performed "Taps," a beautiful tribute that underscored the significance of the day and paid homage to the solemn remembrance of those who have given their lives.
The program was brought to life with the assistance of the RHHS Interior Design class, who transformed the cafeteria into an inviting space with decor that reflected the spirit of the day. Adding a delicious touch, the Culinary Arts students prepared and served an assortment of refreshments, showcasing their skills and ensuring that our veterans and guests felt warmly welcomed and appreciated.
This year’s Veteran’s Day Program was a tremendous success, and it would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of students, guest speakers, teachers, and staff from both schools. We are deeply grateful to all who participated, and especially to our veterans—our honored guests—for allowing us the opportunity to celebrate and recognize their service. Thank you for your bravery, dedication, and sacrifice.

Teachers for Tomorrow Students and CCPS Superintendent Celebrate Reading with Phenix and Bacon Elementary School
On October 23rd and November 5th, Randolph-Henry High School’s Teachers for Tomorrow students, along with Charlotte County Public School's Superintendent Dr. Robbie Mason, took part in two special events designed to celebrate the joy of reading and foster a love for learning in younger students. The group visited Phenix Elementary and Bacon Elementary.
This is a unique opportunity to bring high school students into elementary classrooms and is an integral part of the Teachers for Tomorrow program" said VTfT teacher Rhonda Benn. Teachers for Tomorrow is a course designed to inspire and prepare students for careers in education. The Randolph-Henry students participated by reading aloud engaging books to the elementary students and leading fun, interactive activities to enhance their understanding of the stories.
“I loved being able to read to the kids and see their reactions to the stories,” said Ruby Ramsey, a senior at Randolph-Henry High School who participated in the event. “It made me realize how much impact a teacher can have on a student’s life and how important it is to make learning fun!”
Dr. Mason, who also participated in the events, emphasized the value of this collaboration. “As we work to nurture the next generation of educators, experiences like this are invaluable,” he said. “It’s important for our high school students to see firsthand the impact they can have as teachers, and it is also wonderful to witness the excitement and enthusiasm that reading can generate in young learners.” “These types of events are important because they create a bridge between our schools and allow our older students to interact with our younger students in meaningful ways,” said Randolph-Henry Principal Erin Davis. “It’s a great opportunity for both groups to learn from one another and celebrate the joy of reading together.”
Holocaust Activity
VAUS History students at Randolph-Henry deepened their understanding of WWII and the Holocaust through an educational program in partnership with the Virginia Holocaust Museum. As part of this impactful experience, they painted ceramic butterflies, which will be featured in a commemorative display. Spreading Kindness
Mrs. Benn, teacher for the Randolph-Henry High School Teachers for Tomorrow class, solicited kind and uplifting comments from school staff to "fill students' pots" as an example of the powerful impact we can all have when we fill students with kindness and love. Her students were deeply moved by these words, many even taking pictures to share with their families. In addition, the class had a chance to spread kindness themselves by "painting the campus with love," writing encouraging messages on paint chips and hanging motivational posters throughout the school.
Mrs. Benn is teaching these future educators that academic growth and social-emotional well-being go hand in hand. We're so proud of the powerful, meaningful work happening in this class! #EducatingTheWholeChild #FutureTeachers

Be a Marigold
The Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow (VTfT) class, led by Rhonda Benn, is currently exploring a unit on self-esteem in the classroom. As part of this lesson, Mrs. Benn introduced the metaphor of the marigold versus the walnut tree. Marigolds positively impact their surroundings, fostering growth and positivity, whereas walnut trees can have the opposite effect. To bring this concept to life, students participated in a hands-on activity, decorating small pots and planting marigold seeds as a visual reminder. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Every activity in VTfT serves as a valuable tool for their future roles as educators, equipping them with strategies for fostering positive environments in their own classrooms.

Randolph-Henry High School Celebrates Constitution Day
On September 17th, Randolph-Henry High School marked the signing of the U.S. Constitution with a series of engaging activities that connected students with the historic document and its modern-day significance.
Mr. Guill's VA & U.S. Government classes took a trip to the library where students explored Virginia's role in the Constitutional Convention and interacted with the Constitution itself. They defined key terms, summarized the most important aspects of the document, and discussed how it relates to contemporary issues. In a special touch, Mr. Guill handed out pocket Constitutions to all his students and celebrated the day in style. Both student Zach Hanbury and librarian Mrs. Joyner added to the occasion by dressing as statesmen.
Chef Hilton’s Intro to Culinary classes also joined in on the celebration by researching the types of food consumed in 1787. After gathering their findings, students presented their research via Google Slides, diving into the culinary history of the time.
The schoolwide recognition of Constitution Day was further enhanced by additional information shared through the morning announcements and the Remind app. The activities highlighted the importance of the U.S. Constitution while making history come alive for Randolph-Henry students.
