Dear Our Lady of Las Vegas Community,
We are filled with gratitude as we reflect on the incredible success of this year’s Stardust Gala. Thanks to the generosity and support of our dedicated parents, teachers, sponsors, and attendees, we raised an impressive $72,165.56 to benefit our school and continued support services such as the school nurse, school counselor and teacher aides. Additionally, we are blessed to receive a $30,000 donation from Youth Charities of Southern Nevada, which will go directly to financial aid for students in need over the next three years.
We extend our deepest thanks to our Gala Committee—Abbe Viellion, Cayla Miguera, Melody Allen, Molly Burford, John Pohorsky, and Michelle Roberts—as well as all of the volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to making this event a success. Your hard work and commitment to Our Lady of Las Vegas are truly appreciated.
A special thank you to our friends at Shea Homes for their generosity, which will allow us to give our campus a much-needed facelift this summer. When our students return in the fall, they will be welcomed by a beautifully updated school featuring new flooring, fresh paint inside and out, upgraded lighting, remodeled bathrooms, and a completely renovated front office. These improvements will enhance our learning environment and continue to make Our Lady of Las Vegas a place of excellence. The first day of school is slated for August 11th; however, this date is tentative depending on the progress of the construction.
We are also incredibly grateful for the support of the Gaughn Family and South Point Casino for their continued commitment to our school and for making this memorable evening possible.
Over the past five years, our school has seen remarkable growth. With an enrollment of 464 students, we are now the largest Catholic Primary school in the Archdiocese of Las Vegas. Through grants such as ESSER and EANS, we have been able to invest over $3.5 million into our students’ learning experiences, providing new classroom technology, curriculum enhancements, student support services, and a 1:1 iPad program. As these grants come to an end, we remain committed to finding sustainable ways to continue these invaluable resources for our students.
Our Lady of Las Vegas is more than just a school—it is a community built on faith, dedication, and a shared commitment to academic excellence. None of this would be possible without each and every one of you. Thank you for your continued support and generosity. We look forward to another year of growth and success together.
With gratitude,
Mrs. Marisa Bello
Principal, Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic School

How Healthy Eating at School Improves Grades
We all know the phrase “you are what you eat” — and it couldn’t be truer when it comes to the brain. What you ingest directly correlates with how you think, remember, and focus that day. Remember this the next time you drink a cup of coffee instead of eating breakfast!
Nutrition is especially important for brains that are still growing and learning to ensure that kids and teens stay focused and alert. Healthy eating at school can set the tone for how well students perform and help them establish good habits well into adulthood.
How Nutrition Affects the Brain
When we think about nutrition, we often think about the physical implications, such as weight and energy. But nutrition plays just as important a role in the brain’s ability to function. The brain has two main jobs, the first being to communicate with the other organs in the body and tell them their functions. To do this, brain cells, known as neurons, send these messages throughout the body.
The brain’s other important job is to perform cognitive tasks. This would include how we think, learn, memorize, use our imagination, organize, and concentrate. Of course, this, in turn, affects your ability to get through the day and even regulate your emotions.
A good diet will help improve brain function by encouraging the production of new neurons and the connections between neurons, ultimately improving cognitive functioning. The opposite is true for a bad diet. Instead of helping to produce these neurons, it can actually encourage the release of stress hormones and cause inflammation in certain parts of the brain, negatively affecting one’s cognitive ability.
Nutrition and Students’ Academic Performance
Eating healthy sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads to a student succeeding in school. Better eating means better cognitive function, leading to better concentration, ending with better academic achievement. Just think about how difficult it is to focus while your stomach grumbles!
A study from the CDC found that dietary behavior had a direct correlation to academic grades. Here’s a glimpse at some of the results:
- 42% of students who ate breakfast 7 days a week had mostly A’s, compared to 20% with mostly D/F’s
- 66% of students who ate vegetables one or more times per day had mostly A’s, compared to 52% with mostly D/F’s
- 41% of students who don’t drink soda or pop had mostly A’s, compared to 21% with mostly D/F’s
- Breakfast is known as the most important meal of the day, and science backs this up. Regular breakfast is associated with improved memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Kids who eat school breakfast achieve 17.5% higher on standardized math tests.
