Emmaus Catholic Primary School
Term 2, Week 4 Newsletter: Friday 10 May 2024
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGES
For all Catholics around the world, May is the month of Mary. Catholics look to Mary to learn how to have faith in God and follow God in their daily lives. People learn from Mary’s example how to live as Christians and follow God. Mary is a model of faith. Mary always cooperated and trusted in God. She is an example of living and responding to God with faithfulness and love. Mary always said ‘yes’ to God. She responded with great hope and love to all God asked of her, even in times when she did not fully understand what God was asking of her.
Mary’s example of discipleship helps Catholics be people of faith, hope and love. The Rosary is one-way Catholics can pray with Mary to become people of faith, hope and love. The Rosary is a special prayer which helps people think about and meditate on the life of Jesus. By praying and meditating on the rosary with Mary, people remember the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. They remember and meditate on important events in the lives of Jesus and his mother. Catholics use rosary beads to help them pray and meditate. The beads of a rosary are used to count the prayers as they are prayed out loud or in silence.
The rosary is divided into five groups of ten beads called decades. As people pray the rosary they meditate on the events in the life of Jesus and his mother Mary. These are called mysteries. There are four sets of ‘Mysteries of the Rosary’, called Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. These four “Mysteries of the Rosary” contain, a total of twenty mysteries. The repetition of the prayers when praying the rosary helps people in this prayerful meditation. When people pray the rosary their thoughts focus on a different mystery for each decade. These mysteries represent the significant events in the life of Jesus.
In May of 2002 Pope John Paul II said, "Today we begin the month dedicated to Our Lady a favourite of popular devotion. In accord with a long-standing tradition of devotion, parishes and families continue to make the month of May a 'Marian' month, celebrating it with many devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives!"
Heavenly Father, hold my mother close to your Heart
As we hold her close to mine.
Let her know today and every day How much we love her.
Lord, comfort her mind and reassure her
that her motherly care was everything we needed and wanted
And that we love her dearly.
Lord, comfort her body as she ages and grant her health and
Vitality as she goes through her days here on earth. Bring all
Good things to my precious mother, dear God, and bless her
Every day, in every way,
AMEN
Don’t forget that when it comes to motherhood, we have an ultimate role model in Mary, to whom we devote the month of May. Perhaps her courage, commitment and love might inspire you in your role as mother. To all those mothers and mother figures in our lives, we, at Emmaus Catholic Primary School, would like to wish you all a very Happy Mother’s Day this Sunday.
At the same time, I would also like to remember all our mothers and grandmothers who have passed away…. Please say a prayer for them this Sunday as we remember their love.
MOTHER'S DAY BREAKFAST
What a fantastic attendance of mothers and grandmothers we had this morning at our Mother’s Day breakfast.
Thank you so much to all who attended. Sorry we missed the mums who could not get to the breakfast.
The children certainly loved having you there and it is memories like these that they will not forget.
I hope you all get spoilt this coming Sunday.
If you have a younger child to enrol for 3K or 4K in 2025, lodge an Application for Admission form without delay! We are interviewing for 2025 places during May and June. Places are limited and applications and enquiries are being received daily - do not miss out!
UNIFORM SHOP HERE - THURSDAY 16 MAY - 2:30 - 4:00 PM
JFE Uniforms have advised that girls' culottes and other uniform items are now in stock. The on-site shop will be open next Thursday, 16 May from 2:30 - 4:00 pm. Please head to the Library to make any purchases.
Kindly we remind parents to please label ALL uniform items with your child's name. Lost jumpers and hats are on the rise and we often cannot return clothing items to the owner without their name on it.

Our Cross Country event is on Friday 17 May starting at 9:00 am for all Pre-Primary to Year 6 students.

As well as recognition of Cross Country champions, the Year 4 class will be presenting their item, merit certificates will be given and a Wheelchairs for Kids guest speaker will join us.
CONFIRMATION
The Year 6 class attended the Confirmation Retreat, along with friends from Holy Cross College and St Helena's Catholic Primary School and engaged interactively in a day full of learning and conversation about receiving the special gifts of the Holy Spirit. Thank you to Hannah Wager and the crew from Disciples of Christ 24:7 for planning the day. Ahead of the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday 19 May, we wish Enzo Sansone (Year 6) God's blessings and protection as he is Confirmed in Christ.
LIBRARY BOOK BORROWING
Our students are incredibly fortunate to borrow books from our Library every week. Unfortunately a number of these books are returned in damaged condition (soiled, ripped pages, drawn inside). We encourage parents to monitor care of our school resources that are sent home. Please note that families will be charged a replacement cost if books or resources are damaged or lost.
PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE & SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
National Simultaneous Storytime is held on 22 May this year. Classes will tune in at 12:00 pm to hear the story of 'Bowerbird Blues'. Bowerbird Blues follows a feverishly determined bowerbird on a mission to collect not just all the fabulous blue items he can possibly find but also something else he can’t quite pinpoint.
This book will be available for borrowing from our school Library after our National Simultaneous Storytime session.
During students' visit to the Library this week, they were given information about the 2024 Premier's Reading Challenge. Students are encouraged to read at least 12 books over four months which can include comics, short stories, novels, magazines, lyrics, etc. Not only will those who complete the challenge receive a certificate from the Premier, but they are also eligible to win over 110 assorted prizes. Register via the website: https://www.premiersreadingchallenge.wa.edu.au/
SEQTA ENGAGE SIGN UP
A reminder to all parents that if you have not yet signed up to, or activated your SEQTA Engage account, you will not be able to access your child's mid year report (email was sent two weeks ago to new families and non-activated families). Should you be experiencing difficulty, our network and IT Manager, Steve Duncan, is available to assist on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
WELLBEING @ EMMAUS
Term 2 Wellbeing Focus - Sleep & Relaxation
In keeping with our Sleep and Relaxation focus for this term, students have been learning and practising a range of relaxation techniques in class.
Many studies find that “not enough sleep or disruptions to sleep can have a major impact on daytime functioning including poor concentration… and altered mood. In children, sleep deprivation can affect behaviour and school performance.” (Better Health Channel, 2024)
Read through the Sleep Tips from the Sleep Health Foundation for some ideas to help your child get a better sleep. Often small and simple changes can have a huge positive impact on the amount and quality of sleep that your child is getting. You might even like to ask your child about some of the relaxation techniques that they have been using in class, such as breathing techniques, to help them clear their mind before bed.
URSTRONG LANGUAGE OF FRIENDSHIP WORKSHOP
All parents are invited to register for our URStrong Online Workshop on 23 May. URStrong is the friendship curriculum that is used across the school, particularly from Year 1 to Year 6 teaching children about healthy, respectful relationships and strategies to resolve friendship issues. Our teachers use specific language to coach children in these social skills and the impact is even more powerful when parents use the same language to talk to their children about friendship fires. Please click on the link to register:
FRIENDSHIP NINJA CELEBRATION DAY
Our students have learnt so much about being a good Friendship Ninja in the concepts covered across the URStrong Program. With the parent/child online workshop on the 23 May, we are also inviting students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 to dress as a Friendship Ninja for the day. Black gear with a coloured headband and fabric sash will do! Please see the flyer below.
SILVER THREADS BAND @ EMMAUS
On Monday 6 May, our students were treated to a wonderful performance from the Silver Threads Band. We sang a number of awesome classics and played along with a few favourites too.
We thank all of the band members for giving up their time to entertain us!
