Rāmere Friday 9th of Hongongoi July (Term 2: Week 10 of 10)
Our Tumuaki Principal
Kia ora koutou.
From the Principal's desk:
- Half Way Through: It is always amazing to arrive at the end of a term, and with this term, the halfway mark of a school year. We are really enjoying a much more settled year this year with two full uninterrupted terms and our grounds being all finished from the changes of Term Three and Four last year. It has given us a solid half-year of schooling which the teachers appreciate and children are benefiting from.
- Interviews: Thank you very much for coming along to student interviews last week. It is good to gather around our tamariki with the focus being their formal learning. Research demonstrates that when home and school are on the same page, our children benefit. Together, in partnership, we can make a difference in their lives. The next interviews will be at the end of Term Four. Meanwhile, if you do want to have another catch up chat in Term Three, with your child's teacher, please ring and book a time.
- School Photos: Our annual school photos are Wednesday of the first week back in Term Three. This date is Wednesday 28th July. Your child received a notice last week around this. Please ensure that your child has a clean and tidy school uniform. Remember that pants are black and non-branded and that tops are regulation.
- Tired Children: Each year we survey the children to see how school is for them. It is always very insightful reading as to how our children see coming to school, going into their rooms and doing school work. One item that I noted this year was that several children expressed that they were tired. I haven't noticed this before. During sleep their bodies grow, repair and process the learning of the day. Children benefit from consistent age-appropriate bedtimes. Further, with the rise of digital media, taking a wise approach around devices once children have gone to bed, would be prudent. Tired children do find learning hard and have told us.
Thank Yous - Team Edendale
- Miss Sanne den Boon: The senior room of a school is an important class. Being the 'big children' of the school, the success of the senior rooms sets a culture for the school. Miss den Boon has settled in so well to being our 'big room' teacher. She is stretching these older children well, setting them up for their big step forward. Sanne is the staff representative on the BOT and leads our Health and Safety Committee. She is also a Within School Teacher for our Community of Learning Kahui Ako. She is a committed staff member, often the first one to school each day. Thanks, Sanne for being a professional and dedicated teacher for our school and children.

Term Three's Principal's Challenge - Community Mural Designs
The Project
We have been approached by the Southland District Council (SDC) to help design a 'wrap' for a new toilet that will be going in at the Recreation Grounds in early 2022. See an example of the toilets with their wrap in the photos below. The Design Brief
The design brief that we have been given is 'Something that will represent Edendale'.
The Challenge
Design a picture that can be incorporated into an Edendale mural 'wrap' that can go around the toilets.
It must in some way represent the area that we live in.
Questions that may help with your creativity...
- When you think of Edendale you think of...?
- What makes us in Edendale special and unique?
- What would you tell a person about Edendale, if they asked you?
It is open to any Edendale Primary School student.
The artwork needs to be able to be scanned in high resolution so do it on white paper (not pre-lined paper).
Do not include any words on it. It is straight artwork.
Due
Submissions are due on Friday 10th of September. (So there is plenty of time. Start in the holidays).
Submissions need to include your name and age on the back of them. (Not the front, that's for your artwork).
The Process From There
I will gather the submissions up and work with the SDC to select the best and most appropriate to become part of the Edendale mural artwork for the toilet.
Then in 2022, the winners will see their artwork on public display for all at the Recreation Grounds to admire. Very cool.

Strategic Planning - 2022 and Beyond
The BOT met on Wednesday to shape plans for the future. BOTs build the school of tomorrow.
It was a very worthwhile time where the BOT and senior staff read through pupil, parent and staff surveys answering a number of key questions around where we are at and where we can go from here.
This work then flows into the next six months of school planning work including revamping our Charter that shapes the next three years, that then flows into developing an annual plan for 2022, that then flows into designing a budget to put financial supports around 2022 actions.
Out of Zone Enrolments - Term Two and Term Three
Enrolment at Edendale Primary School is governed by an enrolment scheme.
The Board has 20 places available for out of zone students for the 2021 school year. The exact number of places is subject to the number of eligible in-zone enrolments received.
We have two advertised enrolment periods.
The second half of Term Two 2021 from June 9th to July 9th 2021: Out of zone students seeking enrolment within this enrolment period, the deadline for receipt of applications is Monday 28th June.
Term Three Monday 26th July to Friday 1st October: Out of zone students seeking enrolment within this enrolment period, the deadline for receipt of applications is Monday 26th July.
Information and application forms can be picked up at the school office and are also available on our website www.edendaleps.school.nz.
If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it will be held on the following Monday from the deadline dates.
Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot as early as possible (and within three school days of the ballot being held).
