Principal's Message
Dear VVMS Parents and Families,
School starts this week, and we are so excited to have our school full of students again! Our staff spent last week together preparing to provide them with a welcoming arrival. This work will help students acclimate to in-person learning and will also develop relationships so they feel connected to school. Here is what will be happening this week to support our students with their return:
Arrival to School – Early-arriving students will report to the Commons until 7:15am, and then will have 10 minutes to walk to their first class with their friends. Breakfast is free to all students this school year and will be served when students arrive at school.
September 8th - Our first day of school with 7th grade students is designed to make them feel welcome and to build relationships. Students will be greeted by staff members and our 8th grade WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) leaders. Our 7th grade students will take part in a variety of small group activities that will allow them to become more familiar with the school, their teachers, and their peers. The afternoon will be spent going to each class for a short period of time so students can practice walking to each class and get to know their teachers and classmates. Schedules will be available for pickup in the gym mid-morning prior to them following their class schedule. Students will only need to bring a writing utensil and paper for this day.
September 9th - Our first day of school with all students (7th and 8th grade). Staff members will be at drop-off areas to welcome our students. Schedules will be available for pickup in the Commons for all students. There will be a regular bell schedule, and teachers will focus on building relationships and training students “how to do school” in their classes. Science teachers will present relevant information from our school’s safety plan to their students. Laptops will be checked out through math classes. Students will only need to bring a writing utensil and paper for this day.
Lunch – Lunch is free to all students this year. Students can select their seats on September 9th seating will be spread out to three different areas (Commons, Viking Hall, and some outdoor seating) to accommodate physical distancing. Students will be assigned to those seats for the first couple weeks of school. After 15 minutes, outdoor play areas and the library will be open.
Athletics and Clubs – School sports start this week, and some clubs will start in a couple weeks. We highly encourage students to participate in at least one sport or club. Students who do so are more likely to graduate from high school, attend college, have higher grades, feel more connected to school, and have greater self-esteem. Students will be given access to a locked classroom on the first day to put their athletic equipment in before first period so they do not have to carry it in their backpacks all day. Coaches will check lockers out to students during the first practice, and students will be given access to those lockers in the morning so they can store their athletic equipment. Students will need to bring a combination lock to secure their belongings in their athletic locker.
End of School – Students will be reminded which bus route they ride, and all teachers will be in the bus loop to help students find their bus.
Please let us know if you have any questions about your student’s return to school. The Valley View staff is committed to making every 7th and 8th grader feel welcome and supported. We can’t wait to see everyone back.
Sincerely,
Brian Burdon-Principal (Interim)
