THE TAPESTRY OF MICHIGAN SOCIETY C.A.R.
Have you ever wondered where our past C.A.R. State President’s are NOW??! or wanted to know how or whether they have put their experience and talents as a State President into use?
Being an active C.A.R. member has countless benefits that have not only given our youth the confidence to serve the state society but have also prepared them for significant life transitions such as school to work life. What are some of those skills, you ask?
C.A.R. provides each member the opportunity to learn and practice soft skills such as leadership, time management, communication, problem solving, and critical work ethic skills. Active members actively participate in community service, honoring our veterans, and learn about historic preservation.
Each C.A.R. member who strives to be State President not only has the support of his/her family, but from an army of dedicated senior leaders to support and guide their success. Did you know that many of those senior leaders served as the Michigan Society State President!?
We have two (2) past State President’s that have answered key questions and have shared their stories. We hope to inspire future leadership to not only continue the traditions but also champion new opportunities.
Are you interested in becoming a part of the MICHIGAN SOCIETY C.A.R. Tapestry – be the next STATE PRESIDENT?

LETTER FROM: PRESIDENT PARKER HAGLE
Hi Everyone!
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy start to the New Year!
My term as State President is almost up and the State Conference is just around the corner. I have had such a great year getting to know all of you more and getting to meet new people. This winter has been very busy. I have attended many zoom meetings, holiday parties and events. In November I had my second knee surgery and have been going to physical therapy three days a week and I have been studying for finals and midterms starting after winter break.
In November I went to the Veterans Day ceremony at the White Lake Cemetery, Presented my State Project to the Oaks and the Huron Valley SAR and to the Lac Vieux Desert Trail Society C.A.R.
My sister Macie and I have been volunteering at our local VFW on Fridays for the Fish Fry, served Thanksgiving dinner to the community and did crafts with the kids at breakfast with Santa. In December I attended the Piety Hill DAR chapter holiday party and shared my State Project and my progress throughout the year, as always thank you to the DAR, SAR, and C.A.R. for your continued support!
On December 14th I attended Wreaths Across America at Great Lakes National Cemetery, around 25,000 wreaths were laid! I got to see many DAR, SAR and some C.A.R. members. I have also volunteered at my church by making thanksgiving baskets, serving at the ladies advent tea and reading at our Christmas concert.

LETTER FROM SR. PRESIDENT DEB RAKOCZY
Hello Everyone!
Happy New Year!!! I hope that everyone enjoyed the holiday season!
C.A.R. Pin Update!
A message from Jamie Birchfield: As many are aware, late last year Hamilton Jewelers informed N.S.C.A.R. that they would cease individual orders beginning in January 2024. Little notice was given of this change in operating procedure which then placed a significant burden on N.S.C.A.R. to determine best steps for our organization and members moving forward. Prior to National Convention, N.S.C.A.R. purchased limited inventory to be sold, as Hamilton would only sell directly to the National Society and not our members at that time. An Insignia Task Force was established in June to review all options. We identified new vendor but Hamilton has been unresponsive to requests about the cost to purchase the tooling necessary to make our pins and new tooling would cost thousands of dollars per pin, a huge an unexpected cost to the National Society. In the last few weeks Hamilton has communicated that they desire to resume direct member sales, as was their practice prior to January 2024. Due to the cost associated with contracting with a new vendor and our desire to allow members the opportunity to purchase Insignia as quickly as possible, we are continuing our relationship with Hamilton at the time and they are ready to begin accepting orders. The link to order your pins is below:

Effective 07/04/24 – 10/19/31, all new member application fees will be refunded directly to the corresponding local societies! The more new members you can get, the more money you will get to do fun activities all while supporting veterans, our military, and historic preservation. So, let’s go get some new members! We hope you enjoyed receiving the incentive funds.
By: Joey Podsiadlik, Membership Committee
Membership Objectives
Program: Encourage membership by highlighting the benefits, opportunities, and fun had by C.A.R. members.
Ideas for possible activities:
1. Create unforgettable reminders of the importance of growing membership through “membership moments” at meetings. For example, handing out sweet treats like “M&M’s – Membership & Members”
2. Design displays and pamphlets about N.S.C.A.R. to hand out at community hotspots such as Libraries, Children Museums, etc.
3. Host “pop-up” events and distribute information about C.A.R. via brochures, water bottles with C.A.R. website attached, etc.
- Experiential learning activities at local fairs, festivals, or parks such as making mini crafts, colonial games, etc.
- Organize “Red, White, Blue Flag Football”, 5K’s, parades, etc.
4. Excite other patriotic and parent organizations by sharing the joys and importance of C.A.R. membership through sing-alongs, skits, and other presentations
5. Call upon members to create media and virtual content to share how much fun C.A.R. is
6. Encourage member engagement through attendance raffles and buddy systems
7. Plan fun activities and trips, outside of meetings, with your local society to festivals, amusements parks, or other fun places
8. Maintain contact with prospective members that come to meetings/events to keep them engaged

America 250 Committee Chair - Emma Nelson
Introducing America 250! which is a new contest to help celebrate America! We are getting ready for the USA to turn 250 years old so societies are encouraged to learn about history that happened between March 1, 1774 and June 30, 1775.
1774
· British pass Intolerable Acts (March 31-June 22)
· First Continental Congress (September 5-October 26)
· Suffolk Resolves, Suffolk County, Massachusetts (September 9)
· Greenwich Tea Party (December 22)
1775
· Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride (April 18)
· Battles of Lexington and Concord, followed by the Siege of Boston (April 19)
· Gunpowder Incident (April 20)
· Fort Ticonderoga captured by Ethan Allen, Bendict Arnold and the Green Mountain Boys (May 10)
· Second Continental Congress meets (May 10)
· Continental Army is created from local militias (June 14)
· Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17)
Some great ideas to help celebrate could be skits, creating games/trivia activities, present a program, attend/host a commemorative event, create and informational video/song/film and share, or recreate what would these events look like today. These are just ideas and you can be creative and do other things. Whatever you do, don’t forget to document and take lots of pictures! I look forward to seeing pictures of what you do.

American Heritage Committee Chair, Mason Lowe
This year I was lucky enough to go to Washington D.C. twice. I was able to go for the national conference and then was able to go with my school a month later. we were able to go to gettysburg. learning about the history of what happened on those grounds was so neat. I got to see the memorial for the 3rd Michigan Infantry, it was dedicated in 1889 for the veterans that fought in gettysburg. We also got to go to the Holocaust museum, the smithsonians, flight 93 memorial, and the state Capitol building. It was such a neat trip that I could talk about it alot. I like how they keep the national heritage alive so that people can learn about it.

American History Committee Chair, Morgan Hughes
Hi! My name is Morgan Hughes and I am your State Chair of American History!
I recently spent 4 days in Washington D.C. on my 8th grade trip and learned soooo
much about American History! Here is a photo of my best friend and me in front of
the Lincoln Memorial.
I also spent time at the Vietnam Memorial looking up soldiers on the Wall from Dearborn
where I live. It was a very moving experience.
I encourage all of you to learn about American History in any way you can.
I will be headed to the great city of Chicago this summer for our Churches' Youth mission trip.
I am excited to learn there too.
Have a great summer and learn!

C.A.R. Day of Service - Macie Hagle
Macie Hagle here, your Founders Day Chairperson, to remind you that our annual C.A.R Day of Service. I asked all C.A.R members, seniors, and supporters to complete service activities in your community around April 5th, in honor of the founding of the national society C.A.R. on April 5th 1895.
Can’t think of ways to help? Here’s some ideas:
Clean up trash at your local park/waterway
Volunteer at a food pantry/donate food
Volunteer at a homeless shelter/VFW
Clean up/pull weeds at your local cemetery
Volunteer at your local library
Volunteer at your local animal shelter
Show your community what C.A.R. can do and what it was created for.
* THERE IS NO CONTEST FOR THIS PROGRAM *
Everyone is encouraged to be in their community through volunteering for the sake of making the community better, which in itself is the reward! Remember to have fun and enjoy these activities, don’t forget to turn in your community service hours to the national website nscar.org!
Be sure to send your C.A.R. Day of Service articles and photos to Mrs. Royse for the next Wolverine.
Conservation Committee Chair, Molly Hughes
Hello, my name is Molly Hughes and I am your State Chair for Conservation!
I love nature, being outside and exploring. Here is a photo of me canoeing
at Howell Nature center on my 5th grade class trip!
I am standing here in a photo with my Principal Mrs. Peterson. Today was my
5th grade promotion and I was given the Americanism Award, I was surprised!
Try to remember to "CONSERVE". Try to cut down on buying plastic things,
containers and toys. I know it is hard, but plastic is everywhere, and we use
too much of it.
I challenge you to collect all the small plastic items that you would normally
recycle and save them to make something cool with! See the photo here! There is
so much to collect and so many colors! I will hand out more information at our
packet meeting in Gaylord. See you then!

GOVERNMENT STUDIES - MICHAEL WOLVEN
Hello, I am Michael Wolven chair for government studies, and I had recently set up a trip to lansing. The trip was overall successful. We were able to go and visit the state capital and the house floor. We learned that the Michigan House of Representatives can make bills and bring them to the floor for voting. If the majority of the votes are yes then the bill has passed. I would like to thank Rep. Maddock one of our state representatives for allowing us the time to come visit. Thank you for the wonderful lunch as well. I would also like to thank our C.A.R. State President Parker Hagle and the other C.A.R. members that were in attendance.
Sincerely,
Michael Wolven

PATRIOTIC EDUCATION - CHARLIE KOSTUN
Meet Charlie Kostun, Patriotic Education State Chair
I'm Charlie. I'm 4 1/2. I love the American Flag and Pledge of Allegiance. Blue is my favorite color! What will do you with your society to help tell others about our country? I love wearing my flag bathing suit and telling people the pledge. I'm also going to be in a 4th of July parade with my family and Lexington Alarm Society! Our house needs a new flag, so we are also going to have a flag retirement ceremony this summer.

Wreaths Across America at Lakeview Cemetery
By: Ella Malott, Corresponding Secretary, Elias Cady Society and Lincoln Malott, Historian, Elias Cady Society
On Saturday, December 14, 2024 we participated in the Wreaths Across America event at Lakeview Cemetery in Clarkston, Michigan. We helped place several of the 234 wreaths that were sponsored by the Sashabaw Plains Daughters of the American Revolution chapter. It was a very cold and snowy day, so it made it hard to spot some of the veterans’ graves. Luckily, volunteers had marked some of the graves with red flags. We were surprised how quickly all the wreaths were placed. The last wreath we placed was on the grave of Jeremiah Clark. We look forward to helping out with this event next year.

Lac Vieux Desert Trail Society decorates Christmas Tree with national C.A.R. theme The members of the Lac Vieux Desert Trail Society in Marquette created tree ornaments for the tree they decorate at the local library with symbols honoring first responders. They met at a member’s house for a pizza party dinner, had a zoom meeting with Michigan C.A.R president Parker Hagle to hear about her state project, and then got creative with cutouts, glue and glitter. Two weeks later two of the members helped decorate the tree.
Cutting Hair for Veterans on WLUC TV6

"Lac Vieux Desert Trail Society member Melody Nowicki was recently on WLUC TV6 cutting hair for free for veterans. Per the online article by staff writer Julia Seitz, this is the first year for the Cosmetology Students of Northern Michigan University to attempt this project.
