Weekly Tips for Parents
Focus on the positive when correcting behavior
Teens are more likely to listen to feedback when it feels positive, rather than critical. Focus your comments on things that will bring measurable results, and suggest specific actions your teen can do to improve work or behavior. Then follow up with positive encouragement. And remember,
teens who always do good work need recognition, too! https://tpitip.com/?34hN18608 ; https://tpitip.com/?44hN18608 (Español)
Foster a natural, supportive connection with your teen
Conversation with teens is easier when it is natural, rather than forced. Here are three relaxed ways to stay in touch with your teen: 1. Pick a hobby, sport or special interest you can develop together. 2. Tell your teen about struggles you had at the same age. Then, ask what your teen struggles with. 3. Ask your teen to pick three places within driving distance that would be fun to visit. Make plans to visit them together sometime this year.

Smooth the move to middle school
If your student is starting middle school this fall, your help is important to make the move smooth. Make sure your student starts the school day well-rested, fed and ready to learn. Talk about things that may be different than in elementary school. Say that you understand that some things may be challenging, and that you know your child will work hard. Meeting with the teachers will help you know what to expect and set the stage for teamwork. https://tpitip.com/?34hQ18608 ; https://tpitip.com/?44hQ18608 (Español)
Discuss the many parts of responsibility
Responsibility is more than doing chores or schoolwork. Let your teen know that it is also thinking through how your words or actions affect others or yourself. It's acting in a manner that respects yourself and others. Explain that you expect your teen to keep promises, admit mistakes, make amends and accept consequences without placing blame. Then praise the effort when your teen follows through. https://tpitip.com/?34hR18608 ; https://tpitip.com/?44hR18608 (Español)

Get ready to share the power of your voice with GCPS!
The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC) is a platform where students can make a difference in their school district by sharing their ideas, perspectives, and concerns with the district's superintendent and other administrators. Through collaborative discussions and active participation, SSAC members can influence important decisions directly impacting their education. By joining the SSAC, middle school, and high school students gain a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, build networks, and advocate for positive change within their schools.
If you are a student in grades 6-12 and are passionate about making a difference and contributing to the educational system, applying to the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council is a rewarding step that allows you to have a voice in shaping your school district's future.
Learn more about the advisory council on our website. Applications will be available through the Student Portal from August 7-28, 2024.
