Happy Second Semester Little Raider Families!
We have been busy, busy at Sunnyvale Elementary since we returned in January. We have covered the remaining Be A Raider character traits: Be Honest and Be Kind.
Schoolwide:
Kindness Month is a BIG month at SES. We kicked off Kindness month with morning challenges on the announcements. Many students have turned in their at home Kindness Challenge papers and have received their “Bucket Filler” pencils.
I have had the privilege this month to co-teach with the fabulous Mrs. Bryan (Makerspace) and Mrs. Dodson (Library) to focus on the importance of kindness. The students learned what it means to be a “Bucket Filler” in Makerspace. In the library, we challenged students to come up with ideas of how they could be kind at home, school and in the community. In addition, classes were randomly paired in the “Kindness Connection” to perform acts of kindness before the end of the school year.
Staff members have been spreading kindness throughout the building with our Traveling Gnomies this month. Staff members choose a fellow staff member to give a special treat to show kindness. The six gnomies have almost traveled the whole building!
Special Visitors to SES:
We kicked Kindness Week with 5th grade SIS students doing a Kindness Walk for our 2nd grade students. They read a kindness story and had recess. Big thanks to Mrs. Stancliffe, SIS Counselor, for organizing such a fun activity for our kiddos.
Ventriloquist, Dennis Lee helped us wrap up Kindness Week with an outstanding performance. Thank you PTA for sponsoring this. The kids absolutely loved it! For more information on Dennis Lee please visit his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/NanaPuddinTube/videos
Raider Representatives
Our 2nd grade leadership team performed an act of kindness for our staff this month. They surprised the staff with snack bags that they had decorated. The Raider Reps also created bookmarks for students to take when they visit the library this month.
I would like to formally thank you all for the over pouring of love y’all showed me during Counselor Appreciation. It is a true privilege to work with your children daily. I truly love being the SES School Counselor.
Please remember I am a phone call or email away if you have questions or concerns for your child (at home or at school). I would love to help in any way possible.
Thank you for sharing your little Raiders with me!

I cannot believe it is already March. Spring Break is just around the corner.
In January the character trait was determined and your students learned about the different parts of their brain. They also learned how our thoughts can impact our brains and our behavior. We sorted thoughts into fixed versus growth mindset, and talked about how reframing our thoughts takes patience and practice.
Our February character trait was encouraging and we celebrated Kindness Week. During Kindness Week your students learned about and practiced ways to be kind at school and at home. Our fifth grade students read a story to the second graders at SES, and all of our SIS Raiders decorated coffee sleeves for our local Starbucks and completed secret kindness missions at school. Your student also learned how to respond to mean comments. We practiced 3 responses: "So?", "And?", and "What's your point?". We also talked about the difference between a mean moment and someone who has a pattern of being mean. I hope all of our students know how to spread kindness, but are also equipped to handle someone being unkind.
I am looking forward to March which brings College and Career Week and spring break!
As always, if there is anything I can do to support your student please don't hesitate to reach out.
Happy March!

Hello Raider Families!
We just finished February where we celebrated KINDNESS. Ask your students about our KINDNESS WALL. We worked to spread kindness to others by appreciating staff, specifically custodians and our cafeteria workers. These handwritten notes of appreciation were delivered to staff and students. We are working toward SMS being a KIND school where everyone feels accepted and respected.
We hosted LEVEL UP NIGHT on February 20th. Current 6th and 7th graders are beginning the registration process for the 24-25 school year. Remember, you can find a course description guide on my website as well as email me with questions or concerns. The LEVEL UP powerpoint was sent out by email on February 22nd. I am continuing individual counseling sessions as well as hosting small groups during Flextime and lunch, but am always here to help!

What a fun few weeks it has been at SHS! We have been busy with registering students for next year and have so enjoyed all of the interactions with each one of your kiddos! Please reach out if you have questions or concerns regarding your student's courses for next year. Don't forget about the new April 5th deadline for schedule changes.
We felt so loved during Counselor Appreciation Week. Many students wrote us handwritten cards with the kindest, most appreciative and much needed words. We are certainly blessed with the greatest students and parents.
We also got to attend the Annual Professional School Counselor Conference in San Antonio. It was a great learning experience for us and we came back excited, rejuvenated and ready to try some new things.
Kindness Week was successful once again. Students completed various kindness activities with their Mindful Monday groups all week.
Recently, we have been hearing our students talk about taking intentional breaks from their phone and social media and the positive effect it has on their mental health. For so many students, scrolling their phone has become their coping skill. We would love for you to encourage your student to consider taking some time to unplug.
As always let us know how we can help.

Hello Raider Families,
It has been a busy start to the Spring semester! We have so many great things happening in our counseling department this spring. We have had Kindness Week, Counselor's Week, College and Career Week, Registration and more! Our counselors went to the Texas Counseling Association Professional School Counselors Conference in San Antonio and had a wonderful time learning and growing together! We are excited to bring back all the new information we learned to help meet the needs of our SISD students and staff.
The spring can get very busy and often times overwhelming. Remember to take time to take care of yourself!
Please reach out if we can help you or your student in anyway!
Love,
Mrs. James
