EUSD Newsletter
June 2024
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Emery Unified community,
We have reached another point of celebration and reflection in the school year as students and staff finalize their activities and showcase their accomplishments. Witnessing the effort students put into their research at our annual Civics Night fills me with immense pride and hope for the future. It is one of the many examples of our excellent teacher leadership and student determination within our school district.
Heartfelt congratulations to our Emery Unified graduates! Your achievements fill us with pride, and we wish you all the best for your future endeavors. A special note of gratitude to Emeryville Mayor Courtney Welch for gracing our graduation ceremony as the keynote speaker. We also extend our thanks to business partners, Dynavax for their generous donations of scholarships, and AT&T who provided laptops to our graduating seniors. Your support is invaluable in preparing our students for the next chapter of their lives.
As summer begins, I am reminded of the importance of community, celebration, and continued learning. June holds significance as we commemorate Juneteenth, a day that symbolizes freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. We honor this meaningful occasion and reaffirm our commitment to diversity and unity. I encourage families to check out local activities that celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth. We are sharing celebration details in this newsletter as well.
Summer is a perfect time to broaden our horizons through reading, exploring new interests, and participating in enrichment activities. Our TK-8 students will receive a set of books for summer reading, and I also encourage them to use the resources at their local library for a fun-filled and enriching summer.
Thank you to our Emery community for supporting our students as they complete another educational milestone. For our continuing families, please be on the lookout for our August orientation dates. The first day of school is Thursday, August 22, 2024.
I am grateful to every member of the EUSD community for your support of our school district. I hope you make the most of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you in the fall. Have a wonderful summer break!
Sincerely,
Dr. Quiauna Scott
Superintendent

Art Showcase
EUSD was proud to showcase student artwork at the annual art showcase on May 23rd. The showcase not only highlighted students’ individual talents but also underscored the importance of arts education. We are very proud of our students for their outstanding work and for sharing their creativity with the community. We also thank our art teachers for guiding our students in their studies and projects throughout the year! Here’s a recap of 9th-grade art projects from this past year.
Summer Activities for Families
Sticking to a routine provides children with a sense of structure and stability, making the transition back to school in the fall smoother and less stressful. Promoting continuous learning through reading, educational games, and other activities encourages a lifelong love of learning.
Summer is an excellent time for kids to build their skills in subjects they are passionate about or need more practice in, such as math, reading, or new hobbies. Staying active can include physical activities, sports, and creative projects, which support students with their social-emotional learning and mental and physical well-being. Social interaction through summer camps, group activities, and family outings can help children develop interpersonal skills, make new friends, and build confidence.
The City of Emeryville has published its Summer 2024 City News and Activity Guide! Find opportunities in aquatics, volunteering, youth sports, enrich your learning/skills, and find employment in the Emeryville area. Find fun activities here.
Summer School Details
Summer school runs from June 17, 2024, through July 22, 2024. By staying busy and retaining knowledge over the summer, children maintain their academic progress while growing socially, emotionally, and physically, setting a strong foundation for the upcoming school year and beyond. We look forward to seeing you there!
Summer Reading Program
It is important for kids to retain knowledge over the summer and stay busy for several key reasons. Learning loss, often called the “summer slide,” can be prevented by engaging in educational activities that help ensure children retain what they have learned. Thanks to the support of Dr. Scott, students will receive books in the mail to read over the summer!
We also encourage families to visit the local library and sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Public libraries offer fun, enriching activities for all ages, and through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, the program will carefully select and send age-appropriate books for your child to keep every month!
Juneteenth Community Events
Celebrating Juneteenth is important because it commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, marking a significant milestone in the nation's history. Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, honors the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Summer Meal Program and SUN Bucks
From June 17, 2024, through August 9, 2024, our school site will serve free lunch and a PM snack to all children in the community. Students enrolled in summer school will also receive meals on campus.
Starting this summer, families can buy more food for their child with California SUN Bucks, also called Summer-EBT. SUN Bucks works just like CalFresh, but for the summer.
Children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application or an Alternative Income Form, or get CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal, are automatically enrolled. You don't need to do anything to sign up. SUN Bucks provides $40 per month for food for June, July and August 2024 ($120 total). Learn more here.
