PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
A few weeks ago Napier Intermediate was lucky enough to host Rob Cope’s presentation “Our Kids Online”, it was truly an eye-opening experience. As parents and educators, we are often aware of the dangers lurking online, but Rob’s message really drove home the urgency of the situation. He painted a vivid picture of the challenges our students are facing in today's digital age. From the alarming exposure to pornography to the ever-present threat of online predators, Rob highlighted the very real dangers that many of our students encounter every day. His insights into how social media is affecting our students' mental health were particularly striking-it's not just about screen time but the constant pressure to be switched on 24/7, which is taking a toll on their developing brains.
Rob didn't just leave us with the problems; he also provided practical advice on how we can better protect our students online. He emphasised the importance of open communication and setting boundaries, as well as educating ourselves on the apps and platforms that our children are using. It was a powerful reminder that while the Internet offers incredible opportunities, it also requires us to be vigilant and proactive in guiding our students through its potential pitfalls.
One of the most compelling parts of Rob's message was the discussion around mental health. The constant exposure to unrealistic standards on social media, coupled with the relentless need for validation through likes and comments, is leaving our children vulnerable to anxiety, depression and a diminished sense of self-worth. The online world can be harsh, and without proper guidance, our children can easily fall into a cycle of negative self-comparison and cyberbullying. Rob reminded us that keeping our children safe online isn't just about restricting access but actively supporting their mental well-being. We must help them build resilience encourage them to take breaks from the digital world and foster an environment where they feel comfortable talking about their online experiences. By doing so we can ensure that our children will grow up in a balanced, healthy way, both online and offline.
On a side note, please be aware that some books students bring to school may contain mature content that is more suitable for adults. Before purchasing a book for your child, we recommend reviewing the content to ensure it aligns with their age and maturity level.

It was lots of fun having this as our focus - Mālō e lelei!

MY SISTER LIVES ON THE MANTELPIECE SUMMARY
Ten-year-old Jamie´s sister Rose died five years ago in a terrorist attack set by Muslims. Rose had a twin called Jasmine, who mostly looks after Jamie since their dad drinks. Though Mum buried some of Rose in a cemetery, Dad had her cremated and keeps her in an urn on the mantelpiece. Dad can't move on. Mum leaves, and Dad, Jas, Jamie and their cat Roger move to the Lake District, Ambleside. At Jamie´s new school, he meets a Muslim girl called Sunya. He can't tell his dad about it because he hates Muslims. Jamie writes to his mum all the time, asking her to come back, but she never replies. To get her to visit, Jas and Jamie enter a talent show, but Mum doesn't stay. After the show, Jamie finds Roger run over by a car; This helps Jamie understand why it was so hard for the rest of the family to get over Roses’ death. Dad manages to spread Rose´s ashes in the pond and let go of her. The main themes are death, relationships, and overcoming challenges

JIU JITSU
The first Jiu jitsu lesson was successful this week. The group responded well to Ken the instructor and the feeling is that they are all keen to continue next week. They did speak about the importance of only practicing the moves in this class and not in the playground. The focus really was on self defense and not kicking or punching people at school.
ARTWORK
Rotation 4 students in Art experimented with Optical Illusion artwork using colouring pencils as their medium. Using shading techniques, amazing artwork was produced. Well done to all the students who undertook this task, resilience and perseverance were the key to success.
