Students return to School on Monday, October 14, 2024

We hope each of our students, families, and staff enjoyed a restful Fall Break. We are excited to welcome everyone back on Monday, October 14, 2024. To ease in the transition back to school, please review the arrival and dismissal procedures before Monday.

It is extremely important that families read the information in the weekly newsletter - this includes opening links and reading/reviewing information. Morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up is located in the front of our school (Gordan Road entrance at traffic light). Please follow the flow of traffic which lines up in font of the school and circles through the gravel lot. Parking is not permitted in the grass area of the gravel loop.

Arrival / We encourage all drivers to maintain composure and patience in our car line!

• To assist in a safe and speedy arrival, students should have backpacks on and ready to exit cars when you near the zone of transition.

Late Arrival (Tardy)

• The tardy warning bell rings at 7:35 am. The tardy bell rings at 7:40 am. Students arriving to class after this bell will need to visit the front office to receive a tardy slip for class.
• Parents: If you arrive to car drop off after the tardy bell at 7:40 am, you will need to park in a designated parking space, walk with your child to the front office, and sign your child in to the front office.

Departure Afternoon Volunteers: If your child is a car rider, please park in the car line before coming to volunteer and then return to your car so that you may follow the standard car pick up procedures. When you park in a parking spot, this creates unsafe conditions during dismissal when you and your child must cross the dismissal line.

Departure (WALKERS): Families picking up as walkers are required to have a WALKER sign each time they pick up. With few exceptions, WALKER signs are provided to families who live within the walk zone.

Departure (Car Pick Up): We encourage all drivers to maintain composure and patience in our car line!

• Car Tags: This sign should be displayed at all times until after you have pick up your student.
  
• Only vehicles with the signs will be allowed to pick up your child. If you give your sign to another person, you are giving that person permission to pick up your child. Without a sign, you will need to park and go to the front office and provide photo identification before picking up a student.
• Students will only be loaded from the passenger side of the car.

Early Pick-Up (Early Check-Out) -- Deadline is 1:45pm

• If you need to pick up your student (s) early, you must do so before 1:45pm. Photo identification is required every time you check out students.

safe arrival and departure for all stakeholders!

Standards Based Protocols

New Hanover County Schools implemented a Standards Based Protocol in the 2023-2024 school year to ensure the safety of students, staff, and community members in the buildings. We will continue using these protocols to ensure our safety. Our staff and students practice the following safety protocols based on the Standards Based Protocols:

1. Hold / There is a potential medical emergency and we need the hallways clear

2. Secure / Protocol used to safeguard people in the building.

3. Lockdown / protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep students/staff quiet and in place

4. Evacuate / Things such as monthly fire drills are practiced to ensure students and staff know when and how to evacuate and where to evacuate

5. Shelter / Things such as tornado drills ensure students and staff know where to shelter during inclement weather.

Other important information for student & school safety:

• Everyone entering our building, excluding staff, are required to enter the office area after being allowed entrance to the building.

• All visitors must check in through the Ident-a-Kid computer program, print, and wear the identification sticker throughout their time in our building.

• All visitors on school grounds must report to the front office to sign in during school hours.

• Photo Identification is required to sign in to the school and/or check out a student.

• Walker Tags: Please ensure you have these out and visible when you approach the school. If you need a car or walker replacement sign, please email Dina.Dillon@nhcs.net.

• All afternoon transportation changes must be communicated in writing, in the form of a paper note, with a parent signature. Changes cannot be made by email or phone. In some cases, we can accept a transportation change via email, if a photograph of a valid government-issued ID along with a signature can be shared via email. We cannot guarantee that something sent via email will be read during the school day, and thus this form of communication for a transportation change is not optimal or recommended.

• All of our school and transportation procedures are in place to keep children safe.

• October 15, 2024: Students in grade 5 will particpate in NC Check-Ins for Reading, 4th Grade Make-Up NCCI for Reading
• October 16, 2024: 5th Grade Science NCCI has been postponed until January, 2025, and will not be assessed on this day.
• October 16-18: Make-ups, as necessary, for NCCIs Reading
  
• October 22, 2024: Select 4th Grade students Read to Achieve - make up testing will be October 23, 2024.
• November 4, 6, 7: CoGAT testing, 3rd grade students

Eaton Elementary is excited to be participating in Battle of the Books again this year. Battle of the Books is for 4th and 5th grade students only. Please click here for more information. The first meeting is October 17, 2024.

Please review Board Policy 3400 for additional information regarding evaluation of student progress. A grade correlation for K-2 students being assessed using MClass and Aimsweb+ can be found here.

De-assignment notices come home in student folders. We make every effort to make phone calls to parents when these are coming home. When these come home, parents must write and respond to whether or not their child will continue riding the bus. This de-assignment notice must be returned to the school.

To remain eligible to ride a bus, students and parents/guardians/caregivers must:

• ride the bus at least three (3) times per week
• follow the procedures for 'meeting at the bus stop' for K-2 and special education students
• follow safety procedures when riding the bus

If your background check expires on or before 11/1/2024, you will be unable to volunteer as a Level II until Dr. McCarty receives Level II credentials including a new expiration date from NHCS district staff. She is monitoring this information on a weekly basis.

General Guidelines after receiving district clearance to serve as a volunteer:

• Please have your photo ID ready when coming to campus to either sign in.
• When volunteering, please respect the instructional day and stay within your volunteer area.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. NHCS's Child Nutrition Department provides students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

MySchoolBucks: allows parents/guardians to prepay for meals. In addition, you are able to set up low balance alerts to keep your student's account balance in the positive.

MySchoolApps: MySchoolApps is the fast and secure way to apply for free and reduce meals online.
