SMCPS Offers Conscious Discipline Parent Workshop
October 15th: 5:30 - 7:00
Conscious Discipline workshop for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten families on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, Leonardtown, MD. Local childcare providers and their families are welcome to attend. Conscious Discipline Lead Instructor, Amy Speidel, returns to SMCPS to support families and private providers as we begin a new school year. Participants will learn research-backed strategies based on the brain science that drives behavior in young children. Language shifts will be shared as participants better understand how to use the adult first-child second strategy to discipline. This highly effective approach is proven to increase self-regulation, sense of safety, connection, empathy, and intrinsic motivation in both children and adults.
Mission BBQ has graciously donated dinner for 100 people, which will be provided for registered
participants, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Childcare will not be available.
Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Childcare families may register using the 10/15/2024 Family
Conscious Discipline Registration Form.

Community Gathering and Club Osprey
All students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 5 have had the opportunity to participate in our first Community Gathering. On a monthly basis, we gather as a school community and share announcements, celebrations and fun! This past week, selected students tried Minute-to-Win-It style challenges like cup-stacking and tong pick-up.
For our K - 5 students, we also incorporate the Osprey Clubs into the schedule on these days. The dates for these events are listed below. We intentionally vary the days that these events happen in order that we do not consistently interrupt the same specials and so we can include staff who are not assigned to our building every day of the week.
- Nov. 4
- Dec. 6
- Jan. 21
- Feb. 7 * (new club choices/assignments begin)
- Mar. 6
- Apr. 7
- May 9
Attendance Matters
Your child's attendance is documented in his/her cumulative record. Frequent partial or full day absences can impact your child's ability to make sufficient progress. Please do not jeopardize academic growth for the convenience of picking up early or sleeping in. If your child is demonstrating school avoidance behaviors, please let the teacher know sooner than later. This is a behavior that needs to be remedied early to prevent the development of hard-to-break habits.
Lunch Menus and Cafeteria Spending
The Nutrislice Webpage has links to all SMCPS school menus for daily breakfast and lunch options.
MySchoolBucks will allow you to pay student fees and monitor cafeteria purchases from your computer or phone! You can monitor cafeteria purchases and submit funds electronically to your child's account.
