May - School Calendar
Click here to view our school calendar for the month of May. We try to do our best in planning ahead of time, but we understand that sometimes we have to be flexible with unexpected district changes. We want to take the time to thank you parents for being supportive and understanding as we continue to support our students' academic progress and finish the school year strong despite various challenges. We love our Carrillo community, and we hope that you will take the opportunity to volunteer during this month as it is filled with many events and celebrations.

Carrillo LOVES our Teachers!
Thank you to all of our parents, volunteers, PTO and community partners for donating and showing their love and support for our teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. Our teachers go above and beyond each day for our students to ensure they are provided with the best quality instruction.
Your donations and gifts were extremely thoughtful and heartwarming. Our teachers were filled with gratitude and appreciation. THANK YOU for making their week special!

Ballet Folklorico performs for cinco de mayo
Ballet Folklorico performs to celebrate cinco de mayo. The student participants did an excellent job performing various dances representing different regions. Thank you to Mrs. Orozco Hernandez, parent volunteers and our student performers for a job well done!
HISD GT Expo
Three students represent Carrillo
The Gifted and Talented Department in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) has the primary responsibility of overseeing, supporting, and monitoring the programs for K-12 identified gifted and talented (G/T) students district-wide. On May 9, 2024, Augustyn Sheridan, Beatriz Toledano and Valeria Toledano represented Carrillo Elementary School at the Annual HISD GT Expo and Family Symposium. Thank you to our GT Coordinator, Edith Santiago for helping prepare our students for this event. Carrillo Elementary School was definitely noticed!

Students participating in the YMCA after school program recently learned about entrepreneurship skills and financial literacy. They set up a lemonade stand on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
Carrillo Classrooms - Butterfly Release
Lifecycle of a Butterfly
Students have successfully learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly in science class, and they were able to celebrate by releasing the butterflies in our school courtyard area. Take a look at some of the pictures below.
Congratulations Ms. Keating!
Mrs. Keating is the recipient of the Houston Loves Teachers award
Our very own Carrillo Elementary STEM Teacher, Ms. Keating was the recipient of the Houston Loves Teacher award and prize! She was surprised with a donors-choose check valued at $1,000. She has been an amazing teacher for our students and her engaging STEM program is valuable. And, because of this, our school was also awarded with a $4,000 donors-choose check! Another great reason why Carrillo is a great place to learn.

Have a Carrillo Story to Share?
Do you have a Carrillo newsworthy story to share with us? Examples include, Carrillo students competing outside of school (baseball, softball, karate, debate, community service, missionary trips, stem camps, etc.), participating in extracurricular events outside of school, or perhaps a current club/class competing at an event outside of school. We want to share all the amazing things our Carrillo students do while at school and outside of school. Email photos, details and a short story describing the event to klopez3@houstonisd.org Be sure to include the Carrillo student's full name and grade. Stories received by Saturday 12 noon will be included for the upcoming newsletter.

Must be VIPS approved before you can volunteer.
If you are interested in volunteering at any time during the school year, you must complete the following steps each school year. (So, if you did this last year, you will need to do it again.)
1. Click here to complete a VIPS orientation course.
2. Once completed, you will have a VIPS certificate.
3. Continue to the next steps of completing your English or Spanish application from that same website (This is required for your background check. This may take 24–48 hours.)
4. Once you are APPROVED, you will receive an approval email from donotreply@raptortech.com regarding your approved status.
5. Please forward this email AND the VIPS certificate (two items!) to klopez3@houstonisd.org, so I can add you to the list of approved volunteers. Without the TWO items, you will not be allowed to volunteer at any school event/activity during the 2023 - 2024 school year.
