Principal Letter
Aloha Hickam Families,
Hard to believe the first quarter is wrapping up! We hope your child(ren) have had a fantastic school year so far. Yesterday, our 4th-6th graders bravely stepped outside their comfort zones to participate in the Amazing Shake. They represented our school with incredible poise and skill. We're so proud of their ability to think on their feet and engage in meaningful conversations with new people. This experience will undoubtedly serve them well as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of life.
I've attached a photo of our amazing participants from yesterday's competition.
As we conclude the quarter, please note a slight adjustment to our dismissal times next week. On Wednesday, October 2nd, dismissal will be at 2:10 p.m., while on Friday, October 4th, it will be at 1:10 p.m. to mark the end of the quarter.
The second quarter begins on Monday, October 14th. Parent-teacher conferences will be held from October 28th to November 1st. We wish you all a safe and restful fall break. Take care, and let's finish this quarter strong!
Mahalo,
Patrick Wetzel

It’s free to download to your iOS or Android phone and quick to set up:
- Go to the App Store or Google Play and search for “School News by Edlio” to install.
- Open the app and search for Hickam Elementary School (not Lt Col Horace Meek Hickam Elementary); tap “Add School.” If you have kids in other Edlio-powered schools, add them to the app too.
- Enable push notification by going to the Alerts tab and tapping “Enable Notifications.”
All of the news and events posted to our website are posted here for easy access. You can also add multiple Edlio-powered schools and/or districts to gather all news, events, and alerts in this one app. We’ll send push notifications out to keep you updated on urgent news.
Media Center Updates
Storybook Pumpkin Contest
It's that time again for Hickam's Annual Storybook Pumpkin Decorating Contest!! Students can decorate a FAKE pumpkin into their favorite storybook character! Students will write their name at the bottom of the pumpkin, not visible for the voters to see. Students must also turn in a notecard that the students will say the name of the storybook character, the title of the book, and a brief statement about their pumpkin character.
All pumpkin entries need to be turned in by October 18, 2024 in the Media Center. If pumpkins are done prior to October 18th, students may drop them off to the ATC before school.
Hickam Faculty and Staff will vote for the pumpkin based on originality, creativity, and relevance to the book. There will be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner for each grade level. This is an optional school activity for students to participate in, but must complete at home.

All purchases benefit our school and will connect kids with new books, favorite characters, complete series, and more!
