6th GRADER COLLIN KELLEY, FIRST ROBOTICS CHAMPIONSHIP
Big thanks to the Kilgour community for sharing 6th grader Collin Kelley with the international robotics community last week. Collin has been part of the First Lego League Robotics Team Howl Bout It for several years. Collin and his teammates put in many hours of work throughout the school year beginning each August - designing and programming a Lego robot, and developing an innovation project. For their project this year, the team developed a "PEACE Kit" to help ease stress for anxious flyers, consulting with professionals throughout the year. They even partnered up with CVG and United Airlines to test their product on multiple flights over the last few months, including their own flight to Houston last week!
Their work culminated last week when Collin and his teammates were one of the two teams to represent Ohio at the FIRST Championship and World Festival held in Houston, Texas. FIRST Championship, the world’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for students, commemorated the conclusion of the 2023-2024 robotics season, which challenged FIRST teams to discover the roles STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills play in the arts and bring their ideas to life. The event brought together over 18,000 students from 58 countries.
Fewer than 1% of teams qualify to compete at this elite level, and Collin and his teammates represented Cincinnati Public Schools so well! The team was spotlighted on Channel 12 News a few days before we left town, again on 97.5 FM radio Friday morning during the event, and I'm working with Kathryn Robinson on the CPS side for media (Collin and his teammates are all CPS students at Kilgour and Walnut.) I attached a few photos in case you're able to share in celebration of Collin through any school newsletters or announcements.
