What's Happening at Woodside?
ATTENDANCE COUNTS! Way to go Second Grade!
Learning in elementary school is sequential – each day builds on earlier learning. So, each day absent is a missed opportunity for your child to learn something they will need in order to understand more difficult material later. In order to make the progress and growth, we would love for our Woodside Cougars to shoot for no more than 5 days per year, which will be 95% attendance for the year. Last year, we worked hard on improving our attendance with terrific results! We improved almost an entire percentage from the prior year. We would like to continue that momentum! This means...we will show excitement and have a warm greeting for our students! Our amazing Attendance Clerk, Ms. Ana Johnson, will call every family each day when we don't know why your child is absent. She will go out of her way to offer supports that can aid in the ability to get students to school on time. We also recognize our Monthly Attendance with Cougar Cash/PBIS Rewards for the winning grade level. Our SEPTEMBER Totals are in, and we congratulate SECOND GRADE for meeting the expectation at 95%! Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grades were right behind with 94%, First Grade 93%, TK 92%, K 91%, 7th 90%, and 8th 89%. Great start! Let's stay focused!

Buddies
One of the best opportunities for leadership and connection for our Cougars are Buddies! This week our 7th Grade Big Buddies from Mrs. Lyndaker's class and their Kindergarten Little Buddies from Mrs.Davis' class got together to complete an autumn project this week! Look for the finished projects on the hallway in the the Library! Love the support and connection!
Focus on Self-Management, Respect and Accountability
Our Social & Emotional Learning focus for October is Self-Management. This refers to feelings of motivation to do your best, ability to control impulses, and manage stress. We also like to use this time to review RESPECT for each other and ourselves, including the Golden Rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. Ask your student what they are practicing in this area! Elementary teachers will keep this focus through October 18th.

Innovative School: Design Updates
Our innovative school model at Woodside uses a design thinking approach created by the d. School at Stanford University. This approach is an example of human centered design where we are working to get our students and community more involved in the learning that happens here at Woodside.
Part of this design thinking approach involves the creation of prototypes. Below are some exciting prototypes currently happening across the campus.
Using a light table to improve academic skills and student engagement (TK)
Using hydroponic growing systems and other types of planting spaces to compare growth rates (2nd)
Creating calm classroom environments where students feel connected and increase self-regulation strategies (4th)
Teaching students to reduce their carbon footprint and connect with our outdoor garden space (5th)
Using Legos to support student learning of basic engineering principles (middle school elective)
Reach out and ask your child’s classroom teacher what prototype they are currently designing!
