A message from Principal, Mr. Roulhac
Happy New Year Eagles!
I hope you all had a great Holiday Break and are excited for a new year at Maize Intermediate School. We will send out a larger family Newsletter at the beginning of February, but I did want to get a few important items out to you. Please see below for important information for the remainder of January at MIS!
Parent Drop Off in the Morning - A friendly reminder that our Parent Drop Off process begins at 7:20am through the west side driveway. Students are NOT allowed to be dropped off prior to 7:20am, unless you have been given MIS Administrative approval. We will begin calling households who continually drop their students off early and at the incorrect location to address this issue. Thank you in advance for following our building protocols to make sure all of our students are safe at MIS!
FUN! Friday's @ Maize Intermediate School - We are approaching one of our students favorite special activities at MIS - FUN! Night at MIS. For those of you new to MIS, each year we have a FUN Night for our 6th Graders and 5th Graders separately. Students with signed permissions are allowed to stay after school from 2:50pm - 5:00pm to participate in a variety of fun activities led by MIS staff. There will be a Dodgeball Tournament, Dance Party in the Gym, Movies and Games, and yummy food! We have found this to be a great, safe, supervised afternoon of fun for our students. This year's 6th Grade Fun Night will be next Friday (1/24) and the 5th Grade Fun Night will be the following Friday (1/31). Students will be given a Parent Permission Slip a week in advance, and given a week to turn those Permission Slips back into their Eagles Landing teachers. Please be on the lookout for a Permission Slip to sign from your students. ALL students are welcome!
Winter Weather and Outdoor Recess - With the cold weather settling in, please make sure you're sending you students with appropriate winter clothing outside. We will go outside for recess as long as the Feels Like temperature is above 19 degrees. Thank you for your attention to this!
Lost and Found - We have an overwhelming number of items that students have lost here at MIS. Many of these items have been in our Lost and Found for a number of weeks. For the next two days, we will set these Lost and Found items in front of the cafeteria for students to see and claim. Any items left over at the end of the week will be donated to our local community organizations who are in dire need of many of the items that are sitting in our Lost and Found. Please remind your student to look through the Lost and Found over the next two days.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great January Eagles!

Welcome back, MIS families!
During the month of January the fifth graders will be watching films with regard to Human Growth & Development. Boys and Girls will watch the films separately with same sex adults. The lesson will be taught January 25th during BOB. If you have questions or prefer for your student to not watch these films please reach out to your counselor. We are also including a link to the films if you would like to preview them ahead of time. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
Check out our Counselor's Corner for more information on coping skills, what examples are, and how they can help us work through life's challenges. Coping skills help regulate those strong emotions, and allows your student to become more self-aware at the same time. It is absolutely normal to have strong and often times confusing emotions; what matters is how one responds to those emotions. It is through our challenges that we learn and grow--often this can be an opportunity in disguise.

Beanstack:
Our school is excited to be using Beanstack. This is a reading program that will help motivate students to read with prizes, reading streaks, top 10 lists, badges, and more!
We have two different challenges:
Monthly challenges - students who complete the monthly challenge will receive Mr. Roulhac’s secret monthly surprise! Challenges end on the last day of each month.
Year-long challenge - This challenge has prizes at different numbers of minutes with the end goal being 1,600 minutes in May. Students can collect their prizes from the library before school starts (7:20 - 7:45) or during their weekly scheduled library time.
Get the Beanstack app!
Students can get the Beanstack app on their phone! See Mrs. Lehner’s Google Classroom for more information!
Students are doing an amazing job! Talk with your child at home about the books they are reading, the minutes they are logging, and the prizes they are receiving!
Books:
Students can check out two books at a time for two weeks at a time. Check-out is open in the library before and during school. Students will come to the library every week for class!
Damaged or lost library books:
Please let Mrs. Lehner know as soon as possible about any damaged or lost books. We will let you know the replacement cost and have a new one purchased and shipped to the school. We will not accept replacement books purchased outside of the school at this time. Any books that are damaged but still able to circulate in the library will be charged 25% of the replacement cost.
Chromebook Policy/ Reminders:
Students may only borrow a Chromebook from the library five times a quarter (9 weeks). After the fifth time, students will have to keep their chromebook at school. All students have restarted at zero at the start of the third quarter.
If a student has a damaged Chromebook, it must be repaired by our tech department. Students will also receive a loaner chromebook when their device is getting fixed. These will not count toward the 5 per quarter.
IDs and Lanyards:
From the Board of Education Student Handbook:
8.1 Student Identification
Students are required to wear their District-issued student identification card at all times during school hours. ID cards shall be affixed to a District-issued school-specific lanyard, and worn so that the ID card and lanyard are visible. Principals may excuse the use of lanyards for articulable safety reasons for specific situations. No ID card or lanyard shall be concealed from any school personnel. Students will incur the cost of $3.00 each for replacing lost or damaged ID cards and lanyards.
Students who need a replacement lanyard or ID can come to the library to get a new one. Students can pay with cash or have the fine charged to their Skyward account.
Hello Eagle Families,
As we transition to cooler weather, asthmatic students tend to need their inhaler more often. If your student has a prescribed inhaler and might need it at school, please complete the medication administration form and provide it to Nurse Loni.
