Paul V. Moore High School
March 2024 Recap Newsletter
A message from PVM High School Administration
March was a vibrant month for Paul V. Moore High School! As we embarked on our Spring Sports season, the excitement for upcoming games is growing, especially after witnessing numerous practices held outdoors in the refreshing Spring air.
A sincere thank you extends to the Paul V. Moore Student Government for orchestrating an inspiring talk by guest speaker, Juan Bendana. His insights into student leadership and cultivating "unwavering confidence" resonated deeply with both students and staff, leaving a lasting impact throughout our school community.
Our 9th grade students enjoyed a field trip to Syracuse Stage, where they were treated to an engaging performance, Murder on the Orient Express! We extend our gratitude to Mrs. Jobin and the English Department for organizing such a wonderful outing for our students. This event highlights the significance of a community of flexible and dedicated educators in making such opportunities possible!
We would also like to remind everyone that there will be NO SCHOOL for ALL students on Monday, April 8th due to the Solar Eclipse.
Here's to a fantastic start to Spring, filled with endless possibilities and enriching adventures!

Your yearbook staff has been hard at work taking photographs-
Take a look at them here: sites.google.com/cssdapps.org/pvmyearbook/Events
Is this the first you're hearing about the B roll?
Our student staff members attend events all year long as they practice their photography skills.
As a result, we have more photos of Athletic, Music, and extra curricular events than we could ever contain in a yearbook.

PSAT/SAT/ACT Additional Information
- See where they are and set a target
- Find out about their AP Potential
- Enter the National Merit Scholarship Program
- Help pay for college
- Connect to their future
Why take the SAT exam?: Most colleges—including those that are test optional—still accept SAT test scores. Together with high school grades, the SAT can show your potential to succeed in college or a career.
Why take the ACT test?: The ACT is a good value because it offers a college admissions test, college course placement, and a career planning component for one modest fee. And you can make yourself visible to colleges and scholarship agencies across the country by taking the ACT. It’s a complete package of services to help you get ready for life beyond high school.
Additional Information:
- If you are planning on attending a four-year college or university, check each college's website to see if they require these test scores. Many colleges have adopted a test-optional policy.
- It is advisable to consider taking each test at least once (take the ACT with the writing section; the SAT no longer offers the writing section).
- If you are enrolled in a community college and intend to pursue your Associate's Degree, it's important to note that these tests are not mandatory.
- If your plan involves beginning your academic journey at a community college and transferring to another institution before completing your degree, it's worth considering that you may be required to provide these test scores.

Ideal candidates are students who value volunteerism and are leaders in their community. Students who are selected will attend monthly youth board meetings at the Ronald McDonald House and help to plan and conduct fundraising events. This is an amazing opportunity for a student to get first-hand non-profit and advisory board experience. Students who are interested can stop into the Career Center to obtain the application and a copy of the syllabus for the current year’s program.

ASVAB Testing
The Career Center offers ASVAB Testing to students and ANY student can take it. We will be offering it Monday, April 15 at noon in the Career Center. Since the information is not released to the military unless the student chooses to, the assessment can be used to provide career exploration regardless of gender, ethnicity or ability level, allowing students to explore occupations in line with their interests and skills while developing effective strategies to realize their career goals. Students who are interested can register to take the ASVAB here.
Upcoming Field Trips
We have field trips going to an Open House at Onondaga Community College, Cayuga Community College for an Accepted Students Day, CITI BOCES for a Medical Career Exploration Day, and SUNY Oswego for a College Visit. Remember, the Career Center Calendar gives you an overview of everything that is happening in the Career Center for the school year. Check periodically as events get added often, including opportunities for volunteering and visiting with college and military representatives.

March Art Student of the Month
Congratulations, Angilee Haberer for the being the March Art Student of the Month!
The Art Department’s student of the month for March is Angilee Haberer. Angilee has produced exceptional work in her Advanced Drawing and Painting Studio and Advanced Ceramics Studio this year. She is a dedicated, hard working, responsible young artist. She received an Honorable Mention in the Scholastics Art Competition this year for one of her ceramic pieces. We are all proud of her accomplishments here at P.V.Moore. We look forward to the rest of her art career. Congratulations!
42nd Annual Congressional Art Competition
Hanna O’Neil, an extremely talented 10th grade Art student is submitting an original painting to the 42nd annual Congressional Art Competition. This is open to all students who live in New York’s 24th Congressional District. Congresswoman Claudia Tenney will be holding a reception to honor all of the participants and announce the winner of the competition later this spring. Hanna’s piece is titled “First Encounter”. We are proud that she is representing Paul V. Moore High School's Art Department.
World Language Department
Spanish 2 classes just finished a house and home unit, and to tie in a cultural topic, we discussed "azulejos" in class. Azulejos are Spanish tiles that are often used to decorate homes, churches, street signs and plazas in Spanish speaking countries, as well as other parts of the world. They are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also serve to keep the humid air out of the homes they decorate. They are usually blue and white and feature some sort of combination of geometric shapes. However, many times the tiles comes together to form pieces of artwork that convey a part of history or a story from the Bible.
Mrs. Staats was generous enough to share her materials and show our Spanish 2 students how to design their own tile! Each student received their own square to design and decorate with her guidance and expertise. The students got a feel for what it would be like to create these hand crafted tiles in real life!

World Down Syndrome Day
World Down Syndrome Awareness Day, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012, was March 21st. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
Paul V. Moore High School, and people all over the world, celebrated the diversity and contributions of our community members with Down Syndrome by wearing MIS-MATCHED SOCKS that day. The idea of wearing mis-matched socks was created because chromosomes are shaped “like socks” and people with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome.
The goal for this year’s celebration was to end the stereotypes that often limit people with Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities from living their fullest lives.
Paul V. Moore High School staff and students would like to thank Olivia Chairmonte (Junior) for spearheading this year's celebration!
2023-2024 Opt-Out Fundraiser
Opt-Out Fundraiser Information
In June, the Class of 2023 was able to provide many fun celebrations for the outgoing Seniors. They included cotton candy, kettle corn, specialty lemonades, soft serve ice cream, donuts, and French fries. The Seniors loved it and it was fantastic seeing them so happy.
We would not have been able to do this without the funds we raised throughout the years. We do, however, recognize the financial hardships the last few years have presented and thus affected fundraising participation.
Being parents ourselves, we often feel stressed by fundraising pressures. We have heard many family members state that they would rather make a donation to the cause. For that reason, we invite you to participate in our Opt-Out Fundraiser by making a yearly donation of $20.00, (however, any amount will be accepted and appreciated.) If you choose to participate in our Opt-Out fundraiser, please send a check with your child during the month of November made out to their respective class, with your child’s name on the memo line. Cash is accepted, as well. Please have your child bring the donation to the advisor(s) in the locations below. Please make sure donations get put into the hands of the advisor and are not left unattended. Thank you.
