#MakingADifferenceEveryday
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
The commencement of the 35th Catholic Performing Arts Festival was a truly special event for our school community. Our school choir had the incredible honour of leading the Opening Mass, showcasing their talents and dedication to the congregation in a beautiful and moving way. We couldn't have been prouder of their performance, and we extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs Genevieve Sumich and Mrs Trish Spencer for their guidance and leadership.
This year, our school is entering a variety of sections, including Instrumental Piano solos and duets for Year Four to Year Six, Year Four Ensembles, Sacred Choral Singing, and Choral Singing. We wish all our students the best of luck in their performances and can't wait to hear about their successes.

How Ninja Sets Benefit Child Development.
As part of the establishment of developing early childhood skills from ages three to eight, Mel Maria School has incorporated Ninja sets as a beneficial tool for children's development. These sets provide a dynamic and engaging platform for students to enhance their physical abilities, such as strength, agility, coordination, and balance, from a young age. By integrating Ninja sets into the school's curriculum, students are provided with the opportunity to challenge themselves, boost their confidence, and acquire new skills in a playful and interactive manner. Moreover, Ninja sets promote teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance, fostering essential social and emotional skills crucial for the holistic development of young children. Through the use of Ninja sets, Mel Maria is effectively supporting the overall well-being and growth of its students in the early childhood years.

Congratulations to Year Six PN Community Service Leaders
At the end of Term 2, the Year Six Community Service Leaders at Pater Noster organised a PJ day to collect donations for Perth Children's Hospital, a cause they deeply care about. The students raised over $500 thanks to the generosity of the school community.
Sacrament of Penance – Pater Noster
Over the weekend, the Year Three students at Pater Noster took part in commitment masses where they vowed to receive the Sacrament of Penance later in the year. We ask that you hold these students in your prayers as they continue their journey towards this important sacrament.
The Sacrament of Penance, also known as the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession, is a sacrament of healing. It offers individuals the opportunity to confess their sins, receive absolution from a priest, and experience God's forgiveness and grace, thereby reconciling themselves with God and the Church. It is a beautiful and meaningful sacrament that allows for spiritual growth and renewal.
Penance workshop SJP – 29 August
The Saint Joseph Pignatelli Penance workshop will be held on Thursday August 29, with two sessions scheduled at 3:30pm and 5:00pm. We are eager to welcome parents as primary educators of their children's religious education to join alongside their children in exploring more about the sacrament.
Feast of Mary Mackillop – 8 August
Join us in celebrating the Feast of Mary MacKillop! All parents are invited to join in the Mass and commemorate this special occasion. Mary MacKillop is a significant figure in Australia as the country's first canonised saint. Her dedication to providing education for the underprivileged and her work in establishing schools throughout Australia have left a lasting impact on the country's educational landscape. Mary MacKillop's values of compassion, service, and equality continue to inspire Australians today.
Sacrament of Confirmation PN – 9 August
Pater Noster students will be making the Sacrament of Confirmation on the 9 August at 6 pm. Please keep the students in your prayers as they receive this important sacrament, which strengthens their connection to the Holy Spirit and helps them grow in their faith.

This week in Year One we celebrated 100 days of our learning journey. The children dressed up as 100-year old’s and participated in many fun activities throughout the day, all themed around the number 100. We brought in 100 items and made a trail mix to take home, we completed STEM group challenges to stack the tallest tower with 100 cups, use 100 dominoes make a domino trail, make a 100-piece paper chain and use 100 pieces of Lego to make the number 100.
We brainstormed 100 reasons why we love our school, counted to 100 and drew a portrait of what we will look like when we are 100! We finished our celebration with cupcakes and then went home for a big Nana nap! We had a brilliant day celebrating being 100 days smarter.
We’re thrilled to share that Term Three has started with a splash as our students dive into swimming lessons! The students have loved the bus rides to and from the Fremantle pools, and it’s been wonderful seeing their enthusiasm and progress in the water.
In Year One, we have been celebrating NAIDOC Week with a variety of engaging activities. We learnt about the significance of a Welcome to Country and an Acknowledgement of Country, the students created their own acknowledgments and decorated them with pressed flowers.
One of the highlights was learning about damper and how to make it. The students enjoyed kneading the dough and of course, eating the delicious product with jam.
Our week finished with an exciting incursion where Nixon taught us about the didgeridoo. The students learnt how didgeridoos are made and all the different sounds you can make. We tried circular breathing by blowing bubbles using a straw trying to breathe through their noses at the same time. We also learned new words for animals and had fun acting them out to the sounds of the didgeridoo.
It’s been a busy and fantastic start to Term Three, and we can't wait to see what other exciting activities and learning experiences are in store!

The library staff are so excited to welcome James Foley, author illustrator. He is visiting our school as our author visitor for 2024. James will be sharing with the children, the various characters he has created, and how he came to be an author and illustrator of picture books, graphic novels and chapter books.
- Pater Noster Campus Monday, 29 July.
- St Joseph Pignatelli Campus Friday, 2 August.
In other news in the library the children are excited about Book Week. We will be celebrating Book Week in Week Six on Monday, 19 August. In preparation we have been reading the shortlisted nominated books by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and creating some simple ways to make character costumes using items from home for some of our favourite books.
Waste Wise
Mel Maria has been awarded its Waste Wise Accreditation for 2024. There are various initiatives around the school that support our focus on sustainability and being a Waste Wise environment.
We have worm farms, compost tumblers, recycled paper bins, just to mention a few activities carried out throughout the school. Our Sustainability Ministries have also been busy creating events to promote recycling, reusing, and reducing waste , including such initiatives as our plastic free lunch boxes and cans for change for all of the containers from our canteen.
The library has continued to collect bread tags, bottle top lids, and batteries for recycling . The plastic items are reused in various ways throughout our school or taken to Piney Lakes – Bottle Top Hill Collection Agency.
The children have been fantastic Waste Wise Warriors supporting our collections by bringing in items from home each week.
CPSSA INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNRY CARNIVAL
Well done to the Interschool Cross Country team who represented the school beautifully on Tuesday, 23 July. Our students showed great sportsmanship and gave 100%, frequently finishing in the top ten placings and nearly always in the top half of the field of 48.
Our runners’ performances throughout the day lifted our Girls to third place (only 49 points off first) and our Boys into first place (by 93 points). These two outstanding results earned us our fourth title since 2018 which is a brilliant result. Due to our depth of running talent, the school has not placed lower than second since 2015! Another great day for Mel Maria on the sporting field!
Thank you to the huge number of parents who attended to cheer our charges on. Mr Williams, Miss Taylor and Mrs Hartree were on hand all day to get our runners up and moving – thank you for all your support and organisation during the day! I was immensely proud of our students’ efforts and success; well done to all involved!

What is co-regulation?
Emotions allow us to express ourselves and connect with others — but they can also cause conflict and harm if we don’t know how to handle them. Self-regulation — the ability to manage, or regulate, our own emotions and behaviours — is a skill that most adults have mastered over time.
Co-regulation, on the other hand, happens when two people help each other regulate their emotions. For adults, it can also mean teaching kids how to manage their emotions on their own.
There is science behind co-regulation. Our own stress can make another person feel stressed; our calm can make another person feel calm. Successful co-regulation between a responsible adult and a child involves helping the child calm down on their own — which is why the first step to co-regulation requires you to deal with your own stress in a healthy way.
It’s important to consider the specific things that tend to upset us and think about how we react to them. This is called a stress response. Knowing your own stress responses can help you recognize stress responses in kids — which can look very different depending on the child and the situation — and offer support.
Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or caregiver, there are a few strategies you can use to help a child calm down before their emotions get out of control. For instance, say a child is screaming and crying. Does this cause a stress response in you? First, take a deep breath to calm yourself and then get on the child’s level. Make eye contact with them and tell them what you see: “It looks like you’re really upset right now.” Be sure to use an even tone of voice. The goal is to begin to cool emotions that are running hot. Finally, try to guide them in a calming or breathing exercise. If they don’t want to do it with you, do it yourself, letting them know that such exercises are a good way to deal with intense emotions.
