Annual Boston Art Field Trip
Last Friday, 15th November, a group of art students, the French students and students who just have an appreciation for visual arts went on our annual field trip down to Boston, Massachusetts for the day. We started at the MFA and got to spend two hours soaking up some of the most famous artists in history. Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dali, Kehinde Wiley, and Dale Chihuly are but a few of the greats that are on permanent display. There is also art from ancient Egypt, through the medieval times right into the contemporary age.
From the great art works in the history books, we went on to tour Mass College of Art. Students were able to see other art students working in their first year wing. The charcoal drawings were incredible! We also got to see students who were majoring in ceramics, illustration, printmaking, bronze casting; among a whole series of other artistic disciplines. It was relevant, especially for seniors who are only a few months away from entering into their freshman year of college, to see the level of art that was being created. Some of these students may one day be exhibiting at the MFA.
Lastly, we returned to the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum. This was the most requested gallery to see after the art trip last year and this year students requested more time to move around the collection, to slow down and really take time to appreciate the work. Any of these students will tell you that the largest private art collection is a must see! We had incredible tour guides that spent an hour with us discussing power and art. The Manet exhibition that is currently being hosted at the ISGM was a really special collection of paintings by the famous modernist.
It’s hard to name just one highlight of the day, but for me, my personal joy was the bus ride home after an exciting day in the arts. My students had told me this was the best part of a field trip and I was curious to see why. The students abandoned their cell phones in exchange for some fun with their peers and took part in creating and sharing impromptu slam poetry with each other. The camaraderie in creativity makes planning and running this trip worth every moment. This trip will fuel our creative side as we prepare for the Exhibition of Learning on December 11, 2024!

What is your role at Souhegan?
Social Studies Teacher
How long have you been with Souhegan?
27 years
What do you love about your job?
I love the Souhegan community and I enjoy helping students to succeed, as they move towards their own unique futures.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of Souhegan, I enjoy spending time with my wife (and with my two adult children when they come back to New Hampshire) watching sports (I am an avid Boston sports fan) and running.
If you were given one wish what would it be?
From an educational standpoint, I would like to see our country's educational system continue to evolve towards Souhegan's model. Fundamental to this mission is the belief that it is important for everyone in our society to listen more and talk less, so that we have a greater understanding and empathy for each other.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world"--Nelson Mandela

Best Buddies
Best Buddies NH Champions of the Year Gala
Emma Crisman and Harrell Pascual were selected as the Mission Moment at the Best Buddies NH Champions of the Year Gala! They gave a speech to over 500 people to talk about their friendship, the importance of inclusion, and how our life is better with Best Buddies. It was an amazing honor to be selected and they are both so grateful. It was incredible to see the generosity and all the hard work that went into fundraising. The night of the Gala raised over $60,000 in the live auctions and bidding. Watch the videos below to listen to their speech and a professional video sharing their friendship. It was a night full of laughter, joy, and dancing! These two have worked so hard to create the friendship they have and are two exemplary people spreading the Best Buddies mission. Way to live the six!
