Peek at the Week

Next week in math our focus will shift from volume to area. In past years, students have had to find area with whole number side lengths. The major shift in fifth grade is having to find area with fractional side lengths. This serves as an excellent review of multiplying fractions and whole numbers! As always, we will start with models, and then move toward a more abstract approach.

The area model that we will be covering next week is very important in your child's understanding of multiplying fractions. A common error that many students make is forgetting to multiply the entire mixed number. The area model serves as a visual reminder to multiply all components of a mixed number. When your child is completing homework, please enforce the importance of drawing the area model.

Throughout the past week we have explored the reason behind seasons and day length. Next week we will continue to analyze why different areas of the world have longer or shorter days. After completing this topic we will move into the concepts of shadows, with a focus on how the sun impacts shadow length. Who knows, our explorations might even result in the creation of a sundial or two!

Starting next week in math, if there is 100% homework completion in a class, then students in that class will get the opportunity to start their homework at school. This will provide students with an opportunity to ask questions if needed and motivate students to turn in completed homework. Please let me know if you have any questions.
