Hannah Bystrom
Position: School social worker
Experience: I worked at Fernbrook Family Center for the past 5 years providing children’s mental health services in various positions.
Education: BA in psychology from The College of St. Scholastica, Master of Social Work from Winona State University
What are your hopes as you join Red Wing Public Schools?
I am excited to form relationships with students and caregivers. I hope to help students be successful in the classroom and help connect them/caregivers to needed resources.
What do you want your students to know from Day 1?
I want my students to know that I strive to make school a safe and fun place for them to learn. I can’t wait to connect with all the students.
When did you realize that you wanted to work in education?
I realized I wanted to be a school social worker during a previous position when I worked closely with other school social workers. I admired their passion for their role and creating safe environments for the students. I have always enjoyed working with students and am passionate about helping others.
What’s your first day of school memory?
My mom used to make homemade caramel rolls every year for the first day of school.
Molly Wallerich
Position: Physical education teacher
Experience: I taught elementary physical education in Cannon Falls for 7 years.
Education: Bachelor's of Science Degree in Dietetics from the University of Wisconsin Stout, and a Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Physical Education, Health, and DAPE
What are your hopes as you join Red Wing Public Schools?
I’m looking forward to building a relationship with my students, staff, and the Red Wing community. I’m excited to share my passion and creativity with students that will encourage them to be active inside and outside of school.
What do you want your students to know from Day 1?
First, I want my students to feel love and accepted when they come to the gym. Second, I want my students to know mistakes are part of the process! There will be a unit where all students have a chance to “shine” and we will all grow together.
When did you realize that you wanted to teach?
I didn’t realize that I wanted to teach until my last year of college as an undergraduate student. I was majoring in dietetics, and spent most of my college experience working with kids. I finished my undergraduate in dietetics, and continued my education to pursue a teaching license at the University of Minnesota.
What’s your first day of school memory?
A first day of school memory for me is all the way back to kindergarten during rest time. All students were supposed to be sleeping or resting on mats. I was too excited to sleep and spent the majority of the time rolling pea rocks from the playground back and forth to my neighbor next to me on our nap mats. My energy and excitement in a school setting has not changed!
