STUDENT SERVICES
At Greenland Elementary, the student services staff are asking teachers to provide information on student executive functioning and social competency skills via a questionnaire. The specific areas looked at are self-control, persistence, and social competence. We call this social and emotional learning (SEL). According to the Wisconsin Department of Instruction (DPI), SEL is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Over twenty years of research cited by the Wisconsin DPI shows that direct teaching of SEL skills improves academic skills in areas such as math and reading. Students with advanced skills in these areas have an increased chance of college completion and advanced life skills. According to the Office of Adolescent Health, these skills are a protective factor against risk-taking behavior such as substance use and violence.
Greenland student service staff will provide students with opportunities for extra practice. This practice will come through small group work, individual meetings, or class-wide instruction. You will be contacted by your student’s teacher or student services staff with any opportunities. If you have any questions or think your student may benefit from this extra practice, contact any of the following staff listed below.

OCTOBER FITNESS CALENDAR: FITNESS IS SPOOKTACULAR
Starting October 1st, students can participate in a fitness challenge. Every day, there is a different set of exercises for students to complete. If they do the exercises for the day, they can cross out the box, or put their initials to show that it was completed. At the end of the month, students get a family member’s signature and bring the calendar back to Ms.Brockmann for a STAR ticket. Students complete as many days as they can. If they don’t do it all, that is ok! The fitness calendar is attached to print out and start exercising! If you are unable to print out the calendar, but want a copy, see Ms.Brockmann. Any other family members are welcome to participate and encourage the student to complete the challenge! Any questions, please contact Ms.Brockmann.
