Week 2, Term 2
Principal's Message
Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you've been enjoying the clear skies, even though they've brought some chilly mornings lately.
Learning Focus
Last week, Minister Hon. Erica Stanford outlined six crucial areas for enhancing academic achievement in New Zealand. These priorities, including curriculum clarity, a strengthened focus on Literacy and Mathematics, improved assessment methods, enhanced teacher training, leadership development, and support for students with additional needs, reflect a significant shift in our educational landscape.
Pace of Change
The recent directives on cell phone bans, focused literacy and numeracy hours, attendance requirements, and the accelerated push towards structured literacy raise important questions about our ability to adapt quickly while upholding quality education standards.
Fortunately, many of these changes have been part of our educational vision for a few years. We've been embedding Structured Literacy into the Junior School and gradually implementing it in the Senior School. Similarly, our collaboration with Bruce Moody has yielded a Structured Math approach over time. As well as this, the prohibition of mobile phones in our classrooms aligns seamlessly with our existing policies.
Learning Support
Acknowledging the pressing need for substantial investment in learning support, we advocate for swift action to address gaps in support services, reduce diagnosis wait times, and ensure schools are adequately equipped to cater to all students' needs effectively. While we appreciate the Minister's assurances of additional support, we remain vigilant in advocating for continued prioritisation of these critical issues.
Good luck to everyone heading out on the weekend for Winter Sports, let’s hope the sun keeps shining and the power remains on for our heaters!

Congratulations Bradley!
On Sunday Bradley won the Craig Goulsbro Memorial handicap road race. This is an adult’s
race where riders are put in various grades A-E depending on ability. A grade was full of stars including past and current NZ track riders and Bradley being the age of 12 was put in D grade.
The field left in their grades with a handicap on the grade above with the expectation that the majority end up close for the finish.
Bradley worked hard over 56km to help the D grade bunch go as fast as possible. He launched an uphill sprint to lead over the last hill and across the line with none of the faster grades able to catch him. He pulled off a win over some very impressive riders over 90 minutes of near torture!
Bradley also finished 5th in the U15 National road race a few weeks back here in Cambridge.
