State of the District event highlights student, district achievements
We welcomed more than 50 community and parent leaders to the 2nd Annual State of the District event on Oct. 15 at Sumner High School. Focusing on students, event attendees enjoyed breakfast catered by SHS culinary students, a Career & Technical Education showcase of programs and learning, entertainment by the SHS band, and dance performances by Tehaleh Heights Elementary students and the SHS Asian American Pacific Islander Club.
Superintendent Dent’s informative presentation, titled Building for the Future, touched academics, workforce development and community partnerships.
Prop. 1: Turf fields for safety and community use
Did you know that Prop. 1 on the Nov. 5 ballot includes 8 lighted multi-use turf fields districtwide for safe, year-round playability for students and the community? That includes a field at Donald Eismann Elementary, where the current grass field can't always be used due to weather.
Hear from parents about the field during a recent (Mario-themed!) fun run.

Students, staff practice earthquake safety in Great ShakeOut drill
This morning, SBLSD students and staff joined millions across the world practicing earthquake safety through the annual Great Washington ShakeOut drill. At 10:17 am on Oct. 17, students and staff dropped to the floor, covered their heads and held on to their desks as they would do in the event of a real earthquake.
Learn more about the Great ShakeOut at shakeout.org/washington.
For the safety of students and staff, all SBLSD schools perform emergency drills every month, which include fire/evacuation, lockdown, earthquake and shelter-in-place drills.
SHS Homecoming Parade: Oct. 25
The community is invited to Sumner High School’s Homecoming Parade on Oct. 25 at 4:30 pm. Main Street will come alive with student groups from the high school as well as Sumner Middle and our valley elementary schools.
