The State Flag
Description Of Flag
The flag was adopted by the State Legislature in 1894. The three stripes that are red, white, are called the "Stars and Bars." The cross (canton) represents the thirteen colonies. It is also called the "union square."
Location Of Mississippi
The State is in the southern region. Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, and Tennessee is surrounding the state. The Gulf of Mexico run along the state. Mississippi has a river that runs through, or borders Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa. Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Louisiana.

Politics/Governments
The Governer of MS is Phil Bryant. The Lieutenant Governer is Tate Reeves. People elect the officials to four year terms. Mississippi is one of the five states that elects their state officials in odd number years. The lieutenant gov. basically runs the senate, but the House of Representatives pick their own speaker. The constitution of MS allows the legislature to make up the number of Representatives and Senators. The max number of Representatives is 122, and the max number of Senators is 52.

Vicksburg Courthouse
The courthouse was built by slaves in 1858. Many other famous people in history walked through the doors of the courthouse.
Vicksburg National Cemetery
The cemetery contains 170,000 soldiers, and 1,300 other veterans are buried their also.
Old Capitol Museum
It is the former state building used in the 1800's. It was also used as state house in the 1900's. Now it is a museum on government and justice.
