News
Dear ChurchillCSD Families & Staff,
I am sure you have noticed the weather is changing. The forecasted high on Monday is around 61 degrees with a 45% chance of rain. Be sure to send your children with a jacket of some kind!
With the school year off and running, I want to take a moment and remind us of a few very important items.
Before and after school: These are busy times around our schools. Please allow extra time and be patient. Our bus drivers work very hard to maintain their schedule and keep everyone safe. Please pay close attention to our buses and help keep them accident-free.
It is also important for students to note that they can be held accountable by the schools on their way to and from school if they engage in disruptive behavior to the school process. This includes fighting, bullying, and harassment. Immediately after school students should follow the expectation of their parents and go to their designated pick-up point, bus, after-school program, or after-school destination. We should respect the local businesses and agencies located near our schools and avoid loitering on their property.
During school: While technology is great, we ask that if you need to contact your child you do so through their school offices. We expect our students to only use their devices between classes and during lunch times. This will help them to avoid distractions during school and participate in more learning opportunities available to them.
I thank you for your involvement in your childβs school. If you would like to know how to be involved, talk to your childβs teacher or principal. Have a great week and be prepared to bundle up as it looks like Autumn is beginning to arrive!
Best Regards,
Derild Parsons

IMPORTANT Health Services Information
RESPIRATORY ILLNESS
With the beginning of a new school year, and the close contact we have with one another, brings respiratory illnesses; Influenza (Flu), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and COVID-19.
Symptoms of all three are very similar, which makes it hard to distinguish between these illnesses. Therefore, if you think your child may have one of these respiratory illnesses, please get them tested by a healthcare provider so we can prevent the spread in our schools and community.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students suspected of having a communicable disease may be temporarily excluded from school until an appropriate medical authority determines that the student is not a health or safety threat to other students or staff members. Written documentation may be required from a medical care provider if determined by the school nurse.
Students will be excluded for any of the following conditions:
Fever 100.4 degrees F or higher
Signs or symptoms of possible severe respiratory illnesses (Flu, COVID, RSV)
Diarrhea, defined as having more than 6 loose stools in a 24-hour period, or 3 in a 7 1/2 hour school day.
Vomiting
Mouth or nose sores (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Rash
Suspicious skin lesions (e.g., Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease)
Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
Unusual color of skin, eyes, stool, or urine
Exclusion may also occur for the mildly ill child if the child is unable to participate in normal activities or if the child needs more care than can be provided by school health staff.
LICE
We are all excited to be back at school! As we encourage children to learn and share, they also share things we don't want them to: Head Lice! We start seeing a lot of lice outbreaks at our schools this time of year. Please click the link below to learn how to identify lice and for information on what you can do if lice hits your home.

π Migrant Education Program Newsletter
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) offers technical assistance and financial support to enhance educational opportunities and academic success for migrant children, youth, agricultural workers, fishers, and their families. Its primary goal is to ensure that migrant children receive the same free public education as other children. MEP funds, which are federal, support high-quality education programs for migratory children aged 3 to 21. These funds help prevent penalties due to disparities in curriculum, graduation requirements, or academic standards as children move between states or within a state. Additionally, MEP ensures that migratory children have full and fair opportunities to meet the same challenging state academic standards expected of all students.

Modern Teacher Highlight - Assistant Superintendent Stacey Cooper
#W.A.V.E INSTRUCTIONAL FOCUS AT ITS BEST!
This week, I had the opportunity to escort Sue Holmes, the Chief Instructional Lead for Modern Teacher, around the school district. In case you do not know, Churchill County School District will be featured in a future national conference in February 2025! People from all over the nation will descend upon ChurchillCSD to observe and engage in our foundational exemplars of the Learner-Centered Framework (LCF). Our staff have been hard at work, creating student-led, differentiated lessons, to engage ALL learners, regardless of the knowledge sets of our children. We have a lot to celebrate! From classroom vision statements, classroom codes, SOPs, or learning mapsβ¦we exhibit the importance of learning. During our school rotations, we witnessed learning at its best. I cannot thank the teachers enough for their grit, determination, and patience as we embark on new curriculum, preparation for national conference recognition, and ongoing focus on student needs. Sue will be back in November, and we plan to dive deeper into our LCF growth and development!
School Highlights π
District
Written by Stacey Cooper, Assistant Superintendent
Many people outside the field of education might imagine that professional development days for teachers are leisurely affairsβperhaps involving a few meetings and some coffee with colleagues before heading home early. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. In reality, professional development is a rigorous, full-time commitment. Teachers often work through their summers and engage in continuous learning to maintain their certification.
At Churchill County School District, we take our professional learning seriously. On Friday, September 13, 2024, our staff participated in a range of development opportunities including English Language Arts curriculum development, Math curriculum development, T.R.I.B.E.S student relationship-building, Infinite Campus Training, Suicide Prevention, Pyramids of Intervention, and more. This list is far from exhaustive, yet it highlights the diverse and intensive nature of our professional learning.
We are fortunate to have such dedicated professionals within our district. Weekends, holidays, and summer breaks are often filled with opportunities for growth and learning, all to enhance our teaching practices and the overall effectiveness of our schools. Just as parents strive for the best for their children, so do we, and there is no better way to prepare than through ongoing professional development.

The staff members at CCHS are doing their part in, "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" by proudly wearing suicide awareness pins in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. Their goal is to show their support and raise awareness about mental health. Teacher Stephanie Kille-Reese made the pins and had them available for staff in the office. By starting conversations, and offering support, we are working together to make a difference in our community. Letβs continue to support each other and break the stigma surrounding mental health.
ππ Churchill County Middle School
Students in Lilia Marquezβs Pep Club class made bracelets and keychains for staff members who have made them feel seen during the last few weeks of school.
ππ¦ Numa Elementary School
Students in Kendra Flowersβ class got to do a science experiment with their substitute teacher, Tracy McMindes. The students used vinegar and baking soda to create and observe a chemical reaction.
ππΆ E.C. Best Elementary School
On Wednesday, October 2nd from 5-7 P.M., E.C. Best Elementary School is hosting what they call a magical night of books. We invite the community along with our parents to visit the book fair to purchase books for all ages. This event raises money for literacy materials for classrooms, library books, and funds for future events for students. This will be ECB's third annual Chili Cook-off. Families will compete for a prize of up to $50. There will be a silent auction with themed baskets from sports, spa, game night, camping, and Christmas there will be a little bit of something for everyone to bid on. Literacy Nights happen in correlation with the book fair, but funds raised will be used for additional family events like Parents for Pastries, Purple Up Military Kids Week, and Christmas Performance events.
ππΊ Lahontan Elementary School
Students in Stacey Manningβs class participated in a social-emotional lesson on how to be a good friend. Manning read a story about Tom Cat and Tabby Cat and how Tabby helped Tom when he had a problem. Then as a group, students discussed what they could do to be a good friend
