PaCT Conferences- Mid Year 2023
I would like to thank our school families/ whānau for attending their children’s PaCT Conferences. Strong mutual relationships between home and school are vital for the success of our ākonga (learners). We are immensely proud of the turnout. Our initial goal was for 75% attendance from parents/ whānau. The official turnout percentage was 77%! If you were unable to make it to the PaCT conferences, please phone or email the school and we can arrange an alternative time to discuss your child's learning.
Danielle Morgan- Learner Assistant
We are delighted to announce that Danielle Morgan has won the advertised Learner Assistant Position starting Term 3. Danielle will be working within the Piwakawaka Team. Danielle is mother to Zadie (Room 7) and Juniper (Room 11). We are excited to have Danielle’s skillset and know she will add further value to Stanley Avenue School.
BSLA Teaching and Learning: Piwakawaka Team
Our Piwakawaka teachers continue their great work with the Better Start Literacy Approach. A reminder that this is a phonic based programme that is being thoroughly endorsed by the Ministry of Education and leading educators. We are looking forward to sharing assessment results next term.
Please see below the feedback from Judith Woodham (BSLA Facilitator.)
‘I am very impressed with the teaching team's commitment and very high work ethic to be ready to undertake a lot of new teaching and learning when school is already a very busy place.'
'I feel very fortunate to have been working alongside the Piwakawaka staff.'

Netball 2023
This week saw the last day of Netball in 2023. Netball on Wednesdays after school has been a blast and a big change for students and adults alike.
The Year 1-4 Fun Ferns had a fun last night with the usual skills and games as well as the bonus dress ups, goody bags and spot prizes for everyone. A huge thank you to all the parents involved but especially to Avrill Coombe and Sandra Harris who took the lead for these budding netballers.
This season ended on a high for our Year 5-8 teams. Some wonderful netball was played by all 3 teams and showcased the growth in skills and knowledge of the game over the last few weeks.
Stanley Ave Gold (Year 5/6) won the Clarke Trophy for the opening round, and came runner up in the closing round. Well done ladies....and Joseph for an amazing season. The sportsmanship and team player attitude was a credit to you all and culminated in a very successful season overall. Thank you to Ally van Kuijk for her dedication, patience and support of these Future Ferns.
Stanley Ave Teal (Year 7/8) ended up playing off for 3rd and 4th and played unmistakably their best game this year. It was wonderful to see the drive, teamwork and growth in the knowledge of the game on display. Well done to you all, and we hope that you all carry on in your netball journey. Thank you to Jaimee Corbett and Kristy Mikkelsen for stepping up once again and guiding this team during 2023. The last game was the best...and was a credit to the hard work you put in this season.
Stanley Avenue Blue (Year 7/8) had the most successful season possible, winning the Presidents Cup for the Championship Round, the Dianne Carson Trophy for the Closing Round and the Primary Sports Association for the Best Goal Average. The majority of this team have been together since Year 5 and 6, and along with the addition of boys to the team this year, have an unbeaten record. They are playing a superb brand of netball and the growth and teamwork is amazing and a pleasure to watch. Great job team and a huge thank you to Elle Holder who has taken on the coaching role for the last few years for this group. The fight back after a very tight first quarter against TAPs was a credit to your ability to bring the best out of this team and instill the confidence in them all to do it again and again.
A huge thank you to all our umpires, but especially to our college umpires this season. Umpiring any sport is not easy and to put yourself out in the limelight whist learning a new craft takes courage. We applaud you and thank you for your efforts each week. We hope to see you all in 2024.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who has played a part in this season in whatever capacity. Without you all, Junior Netball just would not happen. It was the wish of so many, that we change to a week night instead of a weekend. There are many learnings that we can take from things that went well and things that need improvement. It is always challenging to be involved in the first of anything and we hope that Te Aroha Netball can build on this start and Stanley Ave will be involved again in 2024.
As always my heart is full and bursting with Stanley Avenue pride.
Have a wonderful holiday....don't forget to catch up with the World Cup in South Africa starting on 28th July.
Go the Silver Ferns!!!

Celebrating Matariki at Stanley Avenue School
Friday 21st July from 7.45 till 8.45 a.m. by Rooms 1-4
Come and help us celebrate the Māori New Year.
In Māori culture, Matariki is the name of the Pleiades star cluster and the celebration of its first rising in late June or early July. This marks the beginning of the new year in the Māori lunar calendar.
This year it falls on Friday, 14 July 2023, which is during the school holidays.
Every year at Stanley Avenue School we celebrate Matariki, and like to involve our school community.
This year we are planning a Matariki Breakfast on Friday 21st July (Week 1 Term 3).
Who can come: All family members are welcome to attend, including siblings (pre-school and college) and parents.
Current Students can attend without family, with parental permission.
Breakfast will include: Weet-bix, cornflakes, fruit , waffles, sausages, bread, spaghetti and baked beans.
Tea, coffee, milo, water and juice will also be available
Vegetarian sausages are available if required-please let us know if you prefer this option.
Koha: In order to help us out with costs we would appreciate a gold coin donation per person, as a guideline
Please bring: To reduce our costs and our environmental waste impact, we encourage as many families as possible to bring their own cups, plates and cutlery.
Ngā mihi nui- Thank you!
Goodbye to our Dental Team
We would like to say a big thank you to these hard working ladies who have incredible patience and are so caring of our tamariki as they look after their dental care.
Room 8 designed cards and gave them to the Dental Nurses. The big card is a big tooth shape, with a toothbrush and toothpaste inside and a farewell note. Everyone in Room 8 wrote a note and drew a picture on a star post-it that they stuck inside the card... and they added glitter (of course!)... Check out the photos below of Room 8 presenting their cards to the Dental Nurses
Be well, stay safe Noho ora mai. See you next time ka kite koe i muri mai
Firth Tower museum Holiday Activities
Included in your admission charge. Available every operational day from Saturday 1st to Sunday 16th July 2023 for families to enjoy together. Your little people may need your assistance with some of our activities.
Please check our website for operational days and admission charges www.firthower.co.nz. We will be closed on Friday 14th July – Matariki public holiday.
Traditionally, Matariki festivities included lighting ritual fires, making offerings and various celebrations to farewell the dead, honour ancestors and celebrate life. Nowadays, people all across Aotearoa come together to remember their ancestors, share (kai) food, sing songs, tell stories and play music.
‘Messages to passed loved ones’ bunting. Write a message on the bunting to remember a loved one who has passed and we will fly the bunting from the homestead veranda. You will find this on the homestead veranda, no. 4 on your map.
Test your Te Reo with our Te Reo Māori item/building names.
Come and find Te Reo labels on the outside of the buildings. Test your Te Reo knowledge. Some relate to the building and others relate to what you might find inside the building. There’s even a QR code to take you to the Māori dictionary if you really can’t get it!
Mahi Kai
Preparing for a Matariki feast! Hidden around the museum are pictures of food items for you to prepare a feast. What can you find? You can list all of the food items on the back of this sheet. The food you find in a ‘kete’ (basket) will have a letter from the alphabet on it. There are 8 kete to find! Unscramble the letters. What word does it spell out?
Hang out the washing activity (weather permitting)
Come and learn what great, great grandma used to wash and hang the family clothes before the washing machine and clothes drier were invented. Behind the homestead, no 4.
Indoor Victorian pastimes
A selection of games to learn and enjoy in the homestead, no. 4 on your map.
Morse Code in the Barn/ Count the Poppies
You’ll need your sharp eyes to find the poppies in The Barn! How about solving the Morse Code and finding the soldiers in The Barn, no 6?
Victorian Outdoor Games (weather permitting)
Good old-fashioned fun to run off some energy in our beautiful reserve, outside The Barn, number 6 on your map.
Photo opportunities
Dress up in Victorian/Edwardian style in the homestead (no. 4), pop your face through the funny photo boards in front of The Tower (no. 5) or sit on the 3-legged stool and ‘milk’ Daisymoo in the Dairy Shed (no.16).
Movie Theatre
Silent, black and white movies playing this holiday period. You’ll find our tiny movie theatre inside the Barn, number 6 on your map.
Thank you
