Jaguar News Journal
October 28th - Nov 1st
From Our Principal
Dear JWE Families,
Hello and Happy Sunday! I hope everyone is enjoying this fall weekend! We want to extend a thank you to all our families who joined us for our Math and Literacy Night last week! We had well over 300 students and family members attend! AMAZING! We hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did!
This Thursday, October 31st, we will have our PTO Fall Fun Run! This will take place during the school day while students would normally be in specials classes. We set it up this way to be sure all students could participate. This event is, of course, a fundraiser for our amazing PTO! Any support and assistance you can offer in rasing money would be much appreciated. Our PTO supports our school in a number of ways - they provide meals for staff during conference nights, help honor staff through appreciation events, help fund assemblies and are currently fundraising to help us replace our upper play structure used by our youngest students! We're so grateful for the work they do and support they offer. Thanks in advance for your helping make the Fall Fun Run Fundraiser a success!
As an additional reminder, October 31st is not a day on which students are able to wear costumes to school. Historically, this has been our Book Character Spirit Day - we have switched this to during Read Across America week later in the year. Due to our Fun Run happening that day, each grade level has selected a color theme and students and staff are invited to dress in as much of their theme color as possible for the day! The class who has the best participation/is designated as most spirited will be recognized and celebrated!!!
On Friday, our Scholastic Book Fair kicks off! We will be having this from November 1st -11th! Students will be able to shop the Book Fair at various times while it's here and we welcome parents and families to shop together while you're in the building for conferences on November 4th! We hope you'll check it out!
As you know, Thursday, October 24th marked the end of our first marking period. Report Cards will be sent home and posted in the Parent Portal on November 1st. Now is a great time for families to be sure they have access to their PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you do not have access and need help getting it set up, RCPS has created this document for families: How to Create a Parent Portal Account (linked).
As an on-going reminder, please be aware that RCPS has had some concerns and issues with younger students being unsupervised at high school games and events. All families are asked to be sure that if your child is at a football game that he/she is both accompanied by and actively supervised by a responsible adult. For elementary aged students, the preference is that your child sit with your family.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and thank you for your continued partnership and support!
Sincerely,
Sara Hammill
Principal
Volunteers Needed For Our Book Fair
From Mrs. Hass -
I’m excited to announce that John Wayland Elementary will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair, which will take place November 1 - 11 in the JWES Library.
For students, it’s one of the most anticipated events of the school year—but we need volunteers to make it happen. We hope that you can offer your time and talents to help students experience Bookjoy firsthand! And every purchase at the Fair directly benefits our school.
So, it’s a win-win!
If you’re available to lend a hand at this upcoming event, please complete this form or reach out to me at phass@rockingham.k12.va. us.
Thanks!
Tricia Hass

At JWES, we encourage students to develop a "Growth Mindset." This means believing in your ability to learn and improve, trying new things, and learning from your mistakes. Instead of saying, "I can't do this," someone with a growth mindset would say, "I can't do this yet, but I’ll keep trying." This shift in mindset can greatly impact learning and success.
A growth mindset sees challenges as chances to grow, not obstacles to avoid. You can help foster a growth mindset by reminding your child that failure isn't a bad thing, but rather an opportunity to learn. Encourage them to take on new challenges and view mistakes as normal. Praise their effort and persistence, not just their achievements.
Sharing your own stories of overcoming challenges can also inspire them. With hard work and determination, they can reach their goals!
Here are some great books that explore the power of a growth mindset:
