Our Weekly Newsletter
Tuesday- November 5th, 2024
Welcome to our 11th week of school!
Happy Tuesday!
I hope you all had a good 4 day weekend. I know that our teachers and staff members worked hard on report cards, prep for conferences and getting caught up on all the day to day items that just never seem to get done!
This weekend is another 3 day weekend, as Monday, November 11th, school will be closed for Veterans Day.
Please do not forget to sign up for Conferences! The newsletter that contains all the conference links are attached to this newsletter.
Report Cards
PPS sent out a Remind Message stating that report cards would be sent out on Friday November 8th, however, our teachers will be sending home paper copies of your student's report card on Tuesday, November 12th. Please look for this in your student's backpack.
Conferences
Please do not forget to sign up for your student's conference! Our goal is 100% attendance, either in person or virtual!
Click the button below to see the newsletter with all the teacher conference links in it.
Field Trips
Please don't forget to pay for your student's field trips! We are having to pay the bills for some field trips and are running up against the fact that some grade levels do not have enough funds to cover the cost. If a grade level does not have enough funds collected, we will have to cancel the field trip. That is definitely something that we do not want to have to do!
Join the fun and excitement of Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB)! This is a fantastic opportunity for 3rd-5th graders to dive into a world of stories, teamwork, and friendly competition. By participating in OBOB, students will read a selection of amazing books, build critical thinking and teamwork skills, and engage in thrilling quiz-style battles with friends. It's a rewarding experience that helps young readers grow, make new friends, and gain confidence. If your child needs a team, or has a team but they need a 4th player, please reach out to jessica.frank@supportabernethy.org. Every child will get to participate! Whether your child loves books or is just starting to discover the joy of reading, OBOB is an experience every child should have! Sign up today to start an unforgettable adventure in reading!
Abernethy's Eagle Track Club
Now that we have this early morning school start time down, I bet you are feeling more motivated to get started with our Eagle Track Running Club!
Time changes on Sunday and I bet you are sitting there wondering what you could possibly do with that extra hour in the morning, and then the lightbulb goes off! Run with the Eagle Track!
I bet you have seen all those runners with the awesome head lamp beanies running when you come for drop off and you are thinking, "That looks so cool!"
I bet your student keeps telling you how much they want to come and run in the morning!
I bet that your student is also telling you all the statistics behind how running has a strong positive correlation with improved learning ability, and how exercise increases circulation in the body and enhances brain functions.
Now I bet you are wondering just how to sign up.....
Well, guess what! All you have to do is fill out the registration form in the link below and show up!
Last-Minute Instructions for Your Students
If you have last-minute instructions or messages for your student, please call the office at (503) 916-6190. Do not email the office, as emails may be missed when staff are out. Calling ensures that your message reaches your student promptly. The office will ensure that your student gets a "yellow" note with their end of day change of plans. All notes get passed out to students at 2:00pm. Please try not to call th eoffice after 2:00pm with change of plans unless it is an emergency.
PLEASE also remember to communicate change of plans with the office if your student is going home with another student on the bus. The bus drivers will need a bus slip to allow a new student to ride for that day. Last minute 2:30 phone calls home to confirm, ask or clarify are difficult and end up holding up the buses from leaving on time.
Thank you for your cooperation!
PTA Mini Grant Applications Are Due Friday!
Get those mini grants in, folks! The PTA invites you to apply for a mini grant to help make a difference for our school community. No idea is too small or too big! Want funding for an after school club? More bike parking? Putting on an event? Supplies for your classroom? Mobile science lab? If you have an idea that could improve Abernethy and all that is standing in your way is some funding, please let us know! The application deadline is Friday, November 1. Learn more about the process and apply here!.
Dine for Dollars @ Tight Tacos
November 12th, 2024
Join us on Tuesday, November 12 for our next Dine for Dollars event at Tight Tacos on Division. Tight Tacos has graciously agreed to donate 10% of all in-store sales – including food, drinks, and merch – all day. Tell your family, friends, and neighbors. This is a great event for our community to come together to support a local business and benefit our wonderful school!
Help Beautify Our Grounds and Garden!
Join Abernethy’s Grounds Committee on Sunday, November 17 from 10 am to noon to help plant flower bulbs for Abernethy’s 100th birthday in the spring! We welcome all green thumbs, hard workers, and kid helpers!
Also, please stay tuned for more garden volunteer opportunities in 2025, and in the meantime, email grounds@supportabernethy.org with questions or programming and improvement ideas!
Interested in Other Volunteer Opportunities?
Abernethy has plenty of ways to get involved! Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Abernethy, build community, and enhance your student’s school experience.
We especially need volunteers to help organize our after school program, PTA clothing center, and community business outreach. Learn more about available volunteer roles and sign up here. [NEED LINK]
In addition, after talking to our dedicated teachers and staff about their favorite ways to be appreciated, we are asking parent volunteers to support their kid’s teacher by helping to cover lunch and recess duties once a month. This is a wonderful way to get involved in your child’s school day, interact with students, and foster a positive environment during lunch and play time. Your presence makes a significant difference, allowing teachers to have a well-deserved break while ensuring that our students are safe and engaged. Our first chance for volunteers to sign up for lunch/recess duty will be on Thursday, October 31, for Halloween. If you have any questions feel free to reach out to Liz Dome at appreciation@supportabernethy.org Sign up here. [NEED LINK]- (Link will hopefully be ready by newsletter time. Waiting on Dunn to give me the new schedule monday and then will get the konstella post up immediately. Might delete the email contact info since it will be on the konstella post too)
Please note that all volunteers are required to complete a PPS background check. If you’re interested in volunteering, please complete the PPS Volunteer Background Check. Background checks are quick and easy, and they’re valid for three years!
Movie Night Is Back!
Friday, November 15th
Join us on Friday, November 15 for our first movie night of the year. Doors open at 6 pm and the movie will start at 6:15 pm. We’ll be screening The Wild Robot, which won in a landslide vote by our kindergarten and first grade students. This event is free for everyone! Bring your friends and your own dinner (no alcohol, please), and enjoy complimentary popcorn provided by the PTA.
Would you like to help with setup or cleanup after the event? Sign up here!
A friendly reminder: Parents should stay with their kids; this is not a drop-off event.
Support Abernethy PE with Our BottleDrop Program
One of the easiest ways to support our kids’ physical education – and the environment – is by recycling redeemable cans and bottles through BottleDrop. Blue redemption bags are always available in the front office, and the PTA also delivers bags to your home! Simply email our BottleDrop coordinator with your address and the number of bags you'd like. To date, we have raised more than $4,500 to purchase PE equipment through BottleDrop. Thank you, Abernethy community! Please see the PTA website for more information.
