All about me...
Family!!!
The best part of my world consists of spending time with my family. Heidi, the oldest, (far left) lives in Smyrna, David, the youngest (and according to his two sisters is "spoiled") lives in Marietta, Georgia, and Erin (far right) otherwise known as the "sandwich" child, lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. Walking through this life watching them grow as children and then as adults has given meaning to my life. I am truly blessed.
My 60th Birthday surprise!
My children and grandchildren arranged to get together for my 60th birthday and take a group picture. With my children spread out across the country, this was a rare occasion and one that I cherished.
Drue and Heidi Matthews and their 6 children
Imagine life with 6 children. My daughter and son-in-law manage to make it work.
Welcome to the newest member of the family - Paige
While out in Utah this summer, I was able to witness Paige Longacre be blessed. She is the best baby who sleeps a lot.
My summer vacation in 2015 was a busy one with several firsts.
While in California this summer, I crossed this off my bucket list.
I was able to touch and feed a dolphin. They are mammals from the whale family.
Never too late to do landscaping.
When I visited my son in Georgia, we did a little HGTV style makeover with the front of his house.
My visit to the Stein Eriksen 5 star lodge was something else.
Don't look down; this view was really spectacular.
David having some fun before he plays a round of golf.
I had the opportunity to watch David play golf at the famous Bobby Jones course in Buckhead, Georgia.

Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life.
Teaching truly is the best profession. I get to touch the future everyday.
Dressed for success!
My students give approximately 5 presentations during the year. They are novice presenters in August, and by June they are truly professionals. Learning to speak in public is a life skill.
Prom 2015
I never miss an opportunity to make a memory with a student. I love my job.
Graduation 2015
I look forward to graduation at the end of the year because it is an opportunity to see students complete their high school education. It's bitter sweet. Always emotional.
Governor Jack Markell and Secretary of Education Mark Murphy visit our classroom.
It's nice to see that a politician will interact so well with students. Gov. Markell asked students about the Senior Legacy Project and their future plans.
Senior Legacy Project
The seniors at William Penn began 2 years ago working on a leaving a "legacy" for their senior project. It was an opportunity for me as a teacher to see incredible growth in my students as citizens. Many students stepped out of their comfort zone to help members of their community. They made a difference.
Reading for fun and for professional growth
Summer reading for this years incoming seniors
The seniors will focus on the theme of heroes in our world. This summer the students read Wine to Water about a bartender's quest to help bring water to the people in Africa.
Reading for fun turned into a different mind set for me.
This book gave me insight into how difficult life in the slums can be. The author Jeff Hobbs made the trip to William Penn to talk to some of our students last year.
The title caught my attention - professional growth and ideas.
"Two brains are better than one!" (38). "...it's imperative for teachers to...foster a sense of community in the classroom." (39).
