Delayed Pay Raises UPDATE
Immediate Release!
Member Press Release - Monday, May 17, 2021 8:45am
From: Fred Kowal
Colleagues,
On Saturday, I shared the following with Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents.
In order to get the word out as broadly as possible, I'm sharing it with you today.
As I indicate in the email, there will be a hard copy letter going to the full membership of our bargaining unit as well.
This is important and good news, the result of strong, unrelenting advocacy by so many of you at the federal and state level. Let's keep the advocacy going, as we need resources that over a decade of austerity budgeting has brought real harm to our campuses and to our work. Check out uupinfo.org to see the many ways we can all take part in these vital efforts.
************
As promised, I am sharing the information we received late yesterday (Friday, May 14, 2021) from the Office of the State Comptroller regarding our long-delayed negotiated 2020 salary increases, and those raises we are due for this year. The dates we will receive the money we are owed by the State of New York are as follows:
1. Those who are due 2020 raises will receive that increase and retroactive payments in paychecks dated August 4, 2021.
2. Raises that we are due for this year will be paid as scheduled: 12-month employees whose increases are effective in July will see the 2021 increase in paychecks dated August 18, 2021.
3. Those who are 10-month/academic year employees whose increases are effective in September will see the 2021 increase in checks dated September 15, 2021 or September 29, 2021.
4. Adjunct faculty will see the 2021 increase in their first check after they return to obligation.
Please share this with your chapter membership ASAP. We will also be sending a letter to all UUP bargaining unit members (we'll be urging non-members to join) that includes this information along with updates on our advocacy regarding safe reopening for the fall semester.
Thanks to all of you for your hard work and for dealing so well with the stress of having to respond to members who have been frustrated and angry at the long delay in getting these raises. We're getting through fairly well, all things considered, but fights remain -- as they always do.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and please take care,
In Solidarity,
Fred

We were happy to hear that our goal was met. Having members enjoys the competition and using this creative opportunity to get active.
Some Highlights
Tanya Hewitt won closest personal prediction of miles
with Don Straight and Peter Brouwer tying for overall group prediction
John Cote with 170.94miles,the greatest number of miles completed in the group
We thank you all who participated and hope that more members will join us in our future competition to cross the nation.

Pre-Retirement Workshop
We split the workshop over two days so we could cover the items covered in an hour so it can be done at lunchtime. Part 1 deals with Medicare and trading in sick days to pay for health insurance and Part 2 deals with the available benefits such as Vision and Dental care that staying a member of the union provides. You may take these workshops as many times as you like as the information is rather complex especially with Medicare. Also you can take these in any order as they don’t depend on each other, also next month we will be doing them in the evening. These Workshops have been very popular over the past year and we have had over 2,000 sign up for them and I encourage every member to attend, even new members so you understand the great benefits we have negioated for you over the past 45+ years. Walter Apple does a great job at running these workshops and is able to answer individual members questions. We don’t record these workshops because of privacy concerns and because the information does change and we want to make sure you have the most current data. Just a heads-up There has been talk in the legislature recently of an Early Retirement Incentive but nothing has passed or been signed by the Governor so we will not cover this during the workshop.
