Tanglen Update
August 30, 2024
Open House was a Success!
Although a heavy rain moved through the area before our Open House started, it was great the bulk of the rain ended before our event. Thanks for coming to the open house yesterday afternoon! The positive energy was felt by us all as students excitedly checked out their classrooms and met their teachers for the first time. If you were not able to attend last night, know that we will have plenty of helpers on Tuesday morning to assist your children to their classrooms.
Looking Ahead...
The first few days of school are always an adjustment period at the end of the school day with transporting your children home. Thanks in advance for your patience as we adjust and learn routines. Construction on Hillside and Cedar Lake Road continues, so this will impact buses and parent pickup. (See the latest update from the city of Minnetonka below.) Build in extra time for the afternoon commute.
*If your child is taking the bus home, plan to meet the children at their bus stop and know that buses may run a few minutes late.
*If your child walks to school, staff members will help them cross the street.
*If you are using our front loop to pick up your children, please carefully read through the pdf below with specific directions to help things run smoothly.
Birthday Celebration Reminders
Birthdays are important! We recognize the birthdays of our students during the morning announcements. Additionally, teachers have different ways of recognizing the birthdays of students in their classes to make the students feel special.
We have a responsibility to help students establish and maintain lifelong, healthy eating habits. Schools can help promote positive choices by providing healthy celebrations that shift the focus away from food and to the child. The District Wellness Policy (Code 533) states,“Community building activities and celebrations that involve food during the school day should be limited.”
We also have seen an increase in food allergies and sensitivities in our students. Many allergens are not easily found on food labels, which can lead to health issues. As a result, edible birthday treats at Tanglen are not allowed.
Individual teachers decide on age-appropriate ways to recognize birthdays within the school day. Some examples include: special activities chosen by the birthday child, families coming to read a book to the class, extended break time, etc.
If children want to hand out birthday party invitations at school it should be done discreetly. Please ask their classroom teacher the best way of doing this.

Jottings from Jim (Our Principal, Dr. Hebeisen)
This coming Labor Day weekend is always filled with anticipation for me. I am excited to see your children next week and give them lots of smiles and hugs. I wonder how long it will take our new students to feel at home in our wonderful school community. I think about how we can best support all of our students to get home safely and efficiently. Overall, I KNOW it is going to be a wonderful year, and I just can't wait for it to start!
Thanks in advance for sharing your children with us! We make an awesome team as we work together to help your children reach their personal greatness!
